Sounds like the water activator switch is sticking. It may help to clean the area where the switch is including the hinge. Remove the dispenser cover by gently prying starting at the bottom going round and round a little at a time to prevent from breaking it. When it's off the screws will be exposed to access the other components.
Since shutting the door stops it the above is most probable but the water inlet valve on the back where the water supply comes in could be sticking.

Check the water supply line behind the unit if possible disconnect after closing supply valve.Turn the supplyvalve back on holding the line and use sink or bucket to catch the water coming out.If you observe competent flow reattach water line and trace out between back and dispensor searching for impedements insupply route.

Water dispenser wont shut-off

Check the solenoid valve is not stuck open. It lets water in, pushing cold water out, and if stuck will not shut off.. It may even have a broken spring, but that is quite unusual

Water dispensor stoppedworking

If the light and ice dispenser on the front panel works and If your fridge is 4 years old or older, the insulation in the freezer door has most likely deteriorated and the water in the tube feeding the water dispenser has probably frozen. Open the freezer door, put a blanket over the food to keep it from defrosting, and use a blow dryer to defrost the door. Blow the hot air on the flat panel inside the door (the backside of the water dispenser). Close the door about every 5 minutes to check to see if the water works. Once the water begins to flow, you have successfully defrosted the ice in the tube. Defrosting the door works for about 12 hours until it freezes again. To solve this problem, I placed a 10" weedeater line up thorugh the dispenser nozzle leaving about 1/8 of an inch sticking out. When the line freezes again, pull out the weedeater line, dispense water to free the ice, and then reinsert the weadeater line. I keep the line in all the time...it works great! If the light or ice dispenser do not work, the problem may be *********** board.

usually you could have a bad water valve. the dispenser side of the valvle could be froze up. if not then there is a small micro switch above the dispenser lever.

Smelly water from door dispensor

I had the same problem. Drove me crazy and cost me about 5 filters at $50 a pop until I found the solultion. Water in the Sears/LG refrigerator that I have (french door trio) goes through the filter then into a container on the left front door of the refrigerator. That container stores the water so it can get cold and it also equalizes the flows in the system so that when you put your glass under the spigot the flow is steady and the water is cold. Problem is .... this tank can build up with algae/slime/foul tasting stuff. Since it is after the filter, no matter how many times you change the filter it will have no impact on the water in this container. That is why if you use the water spigot a lot, the water seems to get a little better (as the tank water gets diluted) but as soon as you don't use it for several hours or more, back comes the smelly water again. Solution for me was to remove the plastic panel on the inside of the left front door and clean the plastic bottle. It is pretty easy to remove with 2 screws and easy to pull off the hoses. I filled is with a little clorox and water and swished it around for several minutes then drained and rinsed it. Then I filled it again with a little clorox (like an ounce or two max) and put the container back into the fridge. Once in the fridge, I ran fridge water through the front water dispenser for about a gallon or so. This flushed out the chlorine in the plastic container as well as the lines between the container and the spigot. After about a half hour of work, my great tasting water in the fridge is back again. I've checked the taste on this water for several weeks now and no plastic/odor/bad tasting water any more. Hope this helps.

Kenmore Refrigerator stopped dispensing water

Look up through the ice despencer on the front door of the freezer. Is the flapper door open? If so it needs to be fixed. If its not then try leaving the freezer door open for 3+ hours to defrost the frozen line in the door. If that doesnt work, the water valve must be changed.(located behind fridge, take off back cord board panel at bottom, the valve is blue)... GOODLUCK!

Kenmore Refrigerator stopped dispensing water

Either your water tank in the fridge froze up, the waterline that goes up the freezer door from the bottom hinge froze, or the switch that your glass hits is damaged. Do you hear any humming or noises when you put your glass up to get water?
