Agitator keeps coming loose during wash/spin cycle. What can I do to fix this problem?

Thanks for your assistance. I will look at the agitator tomorrow to see if what you've suggested will do the job!

I appreciate the advice offered. However, after looking at the agitator, I could not find any place for a set screw - no hole at all. And I could not find any rubber ring either. The agitator seems to just slide down over the splines on the transmission shaft with a "friction fit". I replaced the agitator and used a rubber mallet to pound down on the top of the agitator to perhaps better seat it on the shaft. If this does not work, I may have to order a new agitator.

Hello Oceti - and thanks for your follow-up ! There was NO hole for a set screw in the old agitator! My solution was to order a replacement through a local Appliance store.

The old one was "tourquose" in color and the replacement one is black. The replacement one HAS the Set Screw hole in it - with the set screw supplied. I removed the old one and installed the replacement one, tightened the set screw as instructed, and it is working satisfactorily.

The machine is probably at least 25 years old.

    Regards,

    Jim

There is a screw near the base of the agitator. If it is missing replace it with a stainless steel screw. If this is a machine that is older than 25 years, you will have to replace the rubber ring on the agitator shaft.

I have a maytag mav7600aww washer. I removed the bolt inside of the agitator but it still does not come off. It only moves about 1/2" upward when I try to lift it out. Help!

My Maytag Heavy duty 4 speed select, 10 cycle washing machine agitates while in spin cycle why?

If your Maytag washing machine is agitating during the spin cycle, it could be due to a few different issues. Here are some possible causes:
  1. Defective Transmission: The transmission in the washing machine is responsible for shifting the agitator and the drum between the spin and agitation cycles. If the transmission is defective, it may not be able to engage or disengage the agitator properly, causing it to spin during the spin cycle.
  2. Worn Drive Belt: The drive belt connects the motor to the transmission and helps to control the speed and direction of the agitator and drum. If the belt is worn or damaged, it may not be able to properly control the agitator, causing it to spin during the spin cycle.
  3. Malfunctioning Clutch: The clutch in the washing machine helps to regulate the spin and agitation cycles. If the clutch is not functioning properly, it may not be able to disengage the agitator during the spin cycle, causing it to spin along with the drum.
  4. Faulty Timer: The timer controls the various cycles and functions of the washing machine, including the spin and agitation cycles. If the timer is faulty, it may not be able to properly sequence the cycles, causing the agitator to spin during the spin cycle.
It's best to have a professional technician inspect and diagnose the issue to determine the exact cause and the necessary repairs.

I have a SIMPSON ENCORE 555 heavy duty washing machine. It will do a normal wash cycle, but when it comes to the spin cycle, it doesn't distribute the washing around the drum and hence won't spin. any...

Hi just read your posting. Now does the washing tangle around the agitator? In your posting you mentioned the washing not distributing around the drum.Could you confirm that your machine is a top loader for me,because the word "drum and distribute" are terms for a front loader. If your machine is a top loader which I think it is then the problem could be your brake arm or spin coil is not operating. Please reply and let me know if the clothes are tangling around the agitator.Looking forward to your reply.

Could you please tell me how to remove the agitator for cleaning on a Maytag top loading performa machine heavy duty.super size 3 speeds quiet series 100 13 cycles Thank you Bob Clark [email protected]

The agitator on a Maytag Performa comes off by removing the center post cap and dispenser by pulling on it. Locate the agitator bolt and loosen (you may need to hold the agitator in place while loosening). With the bolt removed, the agitator will lift off.

If you still have questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.
