When in video recording mode LCD screen and viewfinder are black when the lens cap is off.

It could one of a few problems:

1. The viewfinder is pulled out and "PRIORITY" is set to "FINDER".

Push the viewfinder back in or set "PRIORITY" to "LCD".

2. The LCD monitor's brightness setting is too dark.

Adjust the brightness of the LCD monitor.

3. If the monitor is tilted upward 180 degrees, open the monitor fully.

JVC GR-X5e camcorder, lens cap message. Does not show a picture.

It shows all menus, numbers and graphics on LCD, but seems like there's no picture coming through the lens. In both modes, video and still. It seems like it can not see anything as if the lens cap was on all the time.

Could this be a problem with sensor.. CCDs? Lens? Something else?

JVC Digital Video Camera GR-DVL107E

Assuming you don't see any video through the viewfinder, it could be that the CCD has died on that camcorder. It happens, though not frequently.

If the video though the viewfinder is clear, there might be some sensor on the lens ring to indicate a lens cap, or an automatic lens cap not properly disengaging when put in record mode.

Lens Cap warning

Your CCD (the main image component) is dead. Ihad a similar problem with a Samsung. If your JVC is in warranty, take it back and have it repaired. If your JVC is out of warranty, dum it and buy something else since the repair will cost as much as buying a new one.
