Work with an external numeric keyboard

I have an IBM R52 and because there is no numeric keypad I attached one via USB.
But everytime I use it the NumLock enables the numeric function of the main keypad. So I can't use the letters on the right hand side of the keyboard until I switch out the NumLock which also disables the external Keypad.
Is it possible to have the external Keypad working and not to enable the NumLock-function of the main Keypad at the same time (a colleague has the lenovo R500 - there it is possible)?

I'm afraid that is not possible. The only way to overcome this is to get a full size USB keyboard and plug it into the laptop's USB port and type using the full size keyboard.

Did the external keyboard come with instructions to install drivers? Some keyboards will work without them, but others need additional drivers.

maybe it is full of dust on those buttons. Try cleaning it with a duster of mini-brush because it interrupts the function.
