I tried just taking out the battery, turning it off and on, and screwing with the settings. I took the battery out and a ran a mental fingernail file across the top and bottom of the pins where normally charge the phone from. I put the battery back in and it was out of car kit mode. It is working fine now! You can try this too.
Car kit mode means one of two things, first it could have a piece of lint or paper stuck in the charge port making it think there is a car kit plugged in, or second it could be that some moisture got into the port and its giving a indication that something is plugged in. and thats why you're not getting any sound. There is no specific setting to turn on or off 'car kit' mode you can use a paper clip or something and mess with the port a little bit to see if 'car kit' goes away or replace phone

From the indication you are giving sounds like some moisture got in the phone via the charge port, you can try taking phone and battery apart and let sit overnight or put in bowl of rice to remove moisture

Car kit mode is usually caused by debris in the phone's cable connector (at the bottom of the phone). The debris causes two or more contacts to be electrically connected to each other, causing the phone to think it's connected to a car kit. Remove the battery from the phone and clean the cable connector contacts with some rubbing alcohol and the corner of a towel. Also, try using an opened paperclip to scrape the contacts in the connector, this will remove any corrosion that may have built up. Also this can happen due to shortening of the 2 power pins at the bottom. Try using an alluminium piece cone shaped and toggle the pins. They will come out. Car Kit mode comes sometimes due to moisture in the power pins, shortening it.

The Car Kit message is usually caused by corrosion in your charging port. Yes, holding * may revive the phone, but your best bet is to get some contact cleaner and a toothbrush and clean out your charging port.
