My lens gear appears not to we working. When I turn on the camers I get the short Sony gingle sound and then the lens gear sounds like it is doing its job the lens tries to come out into position but can't causing the gear sound to repeat several times before shutting down. Sony Cybershot DSC N1

Short answer. No. If it's like other Sony cameras I've seen there is a worm gear internally which extends the lens. A single grain of sand or dust caught in that gear will prevent the smooth motion of the lens assembly. When you manually pull it with a razor blade you are providing enough force to "jump" the dust or sand and allowing the lens to fully extend. If you're lucky you may dislodge the dust after doing this several times in which case it will last a lot longer. This has actually happened to me with a Sony camera (Just not this model). You can also use compressed air (Dustoff or Dust-Away) to blow on the lens assembly while it is extending or retracting.
If it absolutely won't work anymore and you have nothing to lose, just open it up with a screwdriver and try to clean it. You can likely buy an entire lens assembly and replace it if necessary however this is not for the feint of heart and I would say you might as well just buy a new one.
One camera I had I pried the lens open three times (Just like you did) and it never happened again. Like I said, you may get lucky but the actual repair is expensive and/or time consuming.
Sounds like the lens if jamming from dirt, or you may have a bad gear. Digital cameras often have this problem. You can try blowing compressed air to fee any dirt, but if that doesn't work, it will require servicing, in which case it's usually cheaper to buy another one.
Usually the gears will strip the lens gears which tend to be plastics whereas Sony a cameras themselves have metal driven cogs....I once stripped a sigma zoom using an
A700 simply because the motor on that camera had no feedback on torque...put a different lens to check this out first...then check the faulty lens the cog is visible once you remove the rear mount.
sounds drastic but grab lens and manually help the lens go in or out. if you hear a crunching noise the gears are stripped. not economical to repair. flat rate usually exceeds price of new cam.
commonly problem of the sony camera with retractable lens is the gear is been broke..you will notice a sound that to noisy...it have to repair that gear or replace that if the gear is been damage..
there is a possibility that the lens assembly is not in the right angle like a piece is not in line, or a possible gear slipage, there are many other reasons why this is happening, you may refer to the pictures below.
question, does the camera give out an error message or when you turn it on and press the zoom, do you hear a sound from the camera itself?
if in case will you turn it one and gently push the kens sideways, because like waht i mentioned, a part may just be stuck.
Sounds like you have two problems, both which mean bad news. The clicking could be a broken gear in the lens unit or off track lens. The colors may be caused from a bad ccd or sensor internally.
turn off and turn on the camera. then try to put force on the lens. once you hear a snap do the same with the second lens. then turn it on. if it does not work take it to the store as to which you bought it from
