In general catnip has no real effect on cats, and it does them little help or harm.Because catnip stimulates cats for only 15 to 30 minutes, it doesn't make them addicted.Catnip is now mostly used to make cat toys. But if used in large quantities at one time, catnip can irritate the cat's respiratory system and affect its breathing.

Yes,catnip is completely safe for cats.Rub catnip into your cat's scratching post to encourage use.
Place catnip in toys to promote active play and exercise.Instead of buying small bits, it is better to buy catnip from Mao Mao Cat Shop.

I was asking myself the same question when I saw my cat's reaction to catnip. She loves the stuff, but I was a little concerned that it could be addictive or harmful. After doing some research I found an article on Friendly Claws that discussed catnip at full length. It was useful to find out that catnip can be used to encourage cats to scratch their own posts as opposed to furniture!

It also mentioned that catnip is completely safe and not at all harmful to cats. It's not like a **** or anything, it's just a plant from the mint family that cats have a strange reaction to. As far as I can tell, there's nothing much to worry about when it comes to catnip. According to the article I read, some cats are not even affected by catnip so it's probably not as potent as it may seem.

SOURCE: How can I make my cat's toys to smell like catnip?

You should try buying a bag of catnip leaves and toys without any catnip in them. Then you should place all of your toys in the bag with the catnip leaves for a week. It should give you toys the wonderful scent of catnip, and when the smell goes away, just repeat the procedure over again.

SOURCE: Why do cats like catnip toys?

Cats like toys that contain catnip because it contains a chemical called nepetalactone that makes them excited. Other cats simply don't respond to it though.

What to look for when buying a cat toy?

When buying a toy for your cat there are three important things you should look for. First, you need to look for a sturdy toy, fi it can get tossed, thrown, clawed, batted, kicked, licked and repeatedly pounced on without coming apart, it's a quality cat toy. Catnip-filled toys encourage play, but most cats like to eat catnip and will always try or lick or chew their way to that scrumptious herbal filling. Second, you need to look for toys without removable parts. Catnip mice with yam tails; crinkly cater-pillars bug eyes and plastic mesh balls with tantalizing little bells inside are the most popular cat toys although they have are potentially dangerous parts that come off. If you can pull a part of decoration off a cat toy do it to all of your cat's toys; it's better to have some catnip mice without tails than frequently visit you vet to get the tails out of your cat's stomach. Third, you should look for something fun for your cat. Cat owners often disappointed and frequently annoyed to find that the 80$ worth of custom cat toys get passed over for a piece of crumpled paper. Cats like games that involve climbing, running, leaping and pouncing. Pick toys that encourage those behaviors and your cat will defiantly use them. Furthermore, cats see moving edges better than stationary object, so toys that wiggle or weave fascinate them and trigger their hunting reflexes.

Absolutely, you can visit a local market and buy a bag with catnip leaves and then store all of your cat toys for a week period to make them gain the scent of catnip. You should repeat the process over again when the smell disappears.

What toys are good for my cat?

Cats are good at amusing themselves, so whether it is a ball of wool or expensive toy from the pet store, your cat will have an equal amount of fun. Usually toys with catnip are a big favorite with most cats however not all are susceptible to it.
