Sony Handycam: Tranferring footage from _tape_ to computer by USB

This model of Handycam allows me to record video footage (or snapstill) either to a memory stick or to a mini tape cassette. The manualindicates that the tape, though analogue, creates .mpg format fileswhen transferred.

To transfer from memory stick to PC is straightforward. However, thelengthy manual has so far not yielded information on how to transferfrom cassette to PC.

The camera was a gift (second-hand) from a friend who had bought newequipment. Unfortunately, he no longer has the installation disk. I gotdrivers with some difficulty from the Web, but only for memory-to-PC.

Could someone kindly describe how I can transfer the tape footage? Ifadditional software is required, can someone point me toward it?

Much appreciated.

Steve in Toronto

Transfer/Edit Sony HDR-TG3 1080i AVCHD Videos on Windows/Mac

Sony Handycam HDR-TG3E is a super small camera with full HD recording on Memory Stick in 2008. It includes 4GB and 10x optical zoom for capturing 1920x1080 and 1440x1080 videos. However, this camera does not include progressive recording mode, which indicates that the HD videos are 1080i. Even though it is compact camera, the audio is recorded in Dolby Digital 5.1ch. You can also take 2.3Mp stills while you are recording video footage.
Sony HDR-TG3E features:
- 1920x1080i HD video recording
- 4 megapixel still photo recording
- Dual Rec simultaneous 2.3 megapixel still photo during video recording
- Handy face detection
- Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens
- ClearVid CMOS Sensor and Exmor derived technology
Videos from Sony HDR-TG3E:
Movie Format:
- High Definition: AVCHD (1920 x 1080, 1440 x 1080) in .mts filename extension
- Standard Definition: MPEG2 in .mpg filename extension
Movie Quality:
- HD: FH (1920x1080i, 16Mbps) / HQ (9Mbps) / SP (7Mbps) / LP (5Mbps)
- SD: HQ (9Mbps) / SP (6Mbps) / LP (3Mbps)

Transfer & Edit Sony HDR-TG3 AVCHD videos:
For Windows users:
Install the Picture Motion Browser (PMB) from the bundled CD in box, and connect Sony HDR TG3 to PC via USB cable. Use Sony PMB to download HD .mts videos from camcorder to PC.
For Mac users:
You can capture and transfer Sony HDR-TG3 1080i videos to iMac/MacBook Pro via iMovie after connecting camera to computer with USB cable. However, you may face problem when trying to log and transfer AVCHD videos from Sony Handycam HDR-TG3E to Final Cut Express (FCE) 4 or Final Cut Pro (FCP) 5. After transferring HD .mts videos from camera to computer hard drive, just run Aunsoft MTS/M2TS Converter for Mac as the Mac Sony HDR-TG3 MTS converter to deinterlace .mts videos and convert .mts to .mov for FCE and FCP, if you want to edit HD videos.
Alternative way to transfer HDR TG3 videos for Mac and PC:
Just connect HDR TG3 pocket camera to computer via the USB cable, and the HDR TG3 will display as a hard drive on computer. Navigate to the HDR TG3 hard drive to access the memory stick.
Tips: Sony Handycam HDR-TG3E is the model for Europe, and Sony Handycam HDR-TG1 is the model for US.

I have a sony handy cam model ccd-trv37 on which I just recorded my son at his high school musical. i now want to transfer this tape recording to my Apple Imac so I can edit it and send it to friends. Is...

Yes, firewire or IEEE1394 also called iLink.
Most cameras have a 4 pin connection and Macs a 6, newer models use 9 pin.
iMovie should be on your Mac and this will capture the footage.

I have a Sony Handycam DCR-TRV720 Digital-8 Digital Camcorder. How can I transfer the video from these tapes to DVD? The cabling seems too old school to link up to my computer in order to burn a DVD.

This model has iLink: IEEE 1394 firewire port. If you don't have a firewire card, you can probably find one pretty cheap on the internet (try ebay).
Windows has movie maker, which when the camera is connected, will allow you to capture the video from the camera on the comptuer, although there is no DVD burner software at least on the XP version (not sure about Vista). I use Nero for the whole process: capture, edit, burn to DVD.

Camera won't record/ play footage.

Video head was dirty / clogged due to old tapes usage so it did not recorded any signal on tape and now it requires cleaning with good quality head cleaning tape to record and playback properly.

Unable to import video to computer on sony handycam DCR-DVD703E

I have a Sony computer, Windows XP, and my camera records on tape, so the best I can do is give you some hints.

On my system, I first load a video editing program: Pinnacle Studio, Nero, or Windows Movie Maker and use that to pick up my video. I believe that Mac has at least one very good movie editing program. Load that first, and then use it to load your video file.

A Mac owner could probably give you more explicit directions.

Good Luck

Casette problems

To blank the whole tape, put the lens cap on the camera, then run the whole tape through on "record." Presto, blank tape.

I load my whole tape into a video editing program on my computer and delete the parts I don't want from the program.

DVD conversion

You will have download your analog video to the computer by accessing the utility on the computer programs. Make sure you select the NTSC format on the computer then upload the video to DVD recording. If our camera has S-video output, use this for better resolution

Computer mode

hi follow this steps: Make sure that you have installed the USB driver for the handycam. You can download the drivers from this link: Sony Asia Pacific Support Website--Download Page for HC40E USB Driver for Windows. Connect the handycam to the AC adaptor (the same as putting it on charge). Set the handycam to USB stream mode. (Press P-menu, press MENU, Press EDIT/PLAY, Press USB MODE, Press USB Stream.) Set the tape at the point from where you want to start capturing in PC. Connect the handycam and the PC with the USB cable. (USB-Mode appears on the handycam LCD / viewfinder.) Start Windows Movie Maker. Click on the 'Capture..' link to start the wizard. Select the Sony Digital Imaging Device. Click Next. Specify the file name and path for the capture video. Click Next. Select the desired capture format and Click Next. (Leave it to recommended setting if you are not sure.) The dialog box now displays the Start Capture and End Capture buttons on the left and preview window on the right. Play the tape on the handycam. The video from handycam should appear in the preview window of WMM. Click the Start Capture button to start capturing the video. Click End Capture to pause or stop recording. Click the Finish button. The .wmv file will be saved in the path specified in step 7.
