Zen X-fi 16Mb WPA authentication problem.

Hi, Since last month, I am using a Zen X-fi 16Mb MP3 player. I have a problem connecting to my network. My routerI is only capable in WPA an WEP encryption, and is not WPA2 complient. When I use WPA encryption, I can see on my router that the Zen keeps on authenticating, but cannot connect on the end. When I use no encryption, or WEP, everything works well. Can you confirm, that the ZEN X-fi 16 Mb MP3 player is only usable on WPA2 complient wireless routers ?
Regards,

Sef

I cannot connect. I keep getting a message "authentication Failed"

Do you connect your PC to router in an administrator role using web browser? Or do you connect some device to Wi-Fi network?

  1. Administrator role: You need to have correct login name and password for admin access. Search in manual or ask Google for default login name and password of your router type. If non-default password is set in the router then you must reset router setting and erase its settings to default (factory) status. You will lose all router configuration but default password is back.
  2. Wi-Fi client role: There are more possibilities why authentication fails in wireless communication. Mentioned error message describes what kind of problem occurred.
    (a) A password you put to client device does not match the wireless network password which is set in router. Your computer, tablet or smartphone WI-Fi interface must have exactly same password as WI-Fi network which is transmitted from router. Check and compare passwords on both sides, in client device and in router.
    (b) Client Wi-Fi interface security (encryption) mode differs from Wi-Fi network encryption used in router. But the same mode must be set on both sides (client and router) for successful connection.
Encryption modes are
  • WPA2 Enterpise
  • WPA2 PSK ("home")
  • WPA Enterprise
  • WPA PSK
  • WEP
  • No encryption (open)
Higher position - better security. Enterprise Wi-Fi modes require security devices like authentication servers, certification authorities etc. They are not used in home networks usually.

My Zen x fi wont turn on, and doesn't charge when plugged in,I've only had this thing for two months. The power switch seems to be totally non responsive

Hi

Try and reset the player by inserting a pointed object inside the small hole, press and hold for 5-10 seconds to let the player reset. If this doesn't work then connect the player with the computer and let it charge. Please check this link for details---

Creative Zen player reset

Please post for any further assistance. Hope this helps...

How to secure my internet connection via smc router

If you plan to have a wireless network, you should set it up so that only people you choose can access it. Here are a few options for wireless network security.

Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP)
WEP is a widely used network security method. When you enable WEP, you set up a network security key. This key encrypts the information that one computer sends to another computer across your network. The receiving computer needs the key to decode the information so that it's difficult for someone on another computer to get onto your network and access files without your permission.

Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA)
WPA was created to improve the security of WEP. Like WEP, WPA encrypts information, but it also checks to make sure that the network security key has not been modified. WPA also authenticates users to help ensure that only authorized people can access the network. If your networking hardware works with both WEP and WPA security, we recommend that you use WPA.

There are two types of WPA authentication: WPA and WPA2. WPA is designed to work with all wireless network adapters, but it might not work with older routers or access points. WPA2 is more secure than WPA, but it will not work with some older network adapters. WPA is designed to be used with an 802.1X authentication server, which distributes different keys to each user. This is referred to as WPA-Enterprise or WPA2-Enterprise. It can also be used in a pre-shared key (PSK) mode, where every user is given the same passphrase. This is referred to as WPA-Personal or WPA2-Personal.

802.1X authentication
802.1X authentication can help enhance security for 802.11 wireless networks and wired Ethernet networks. 802.1X uses an authentication server to validate users and provide network access. On wireless networks, 802.1X can work with Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) or Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) keys. This type of authentication is typically used when connecting to a workplace network.

IF THIS ALL DOSEN'T WORK TRY THE FOLLOWING:

Wireless network security recommendations
If you have a wireless network, there are some additional security precautions that you should take.

Use a network security key
If you have a wireless network, you should set up a network security key, which turns on encryption. With encryption, people can't connect to your network without the security key. Also, any information that is sent across your network is encrypted so that only computers that have the key to decrypt the information can read it. This can help avert attempts to access your network and files without your permission. Common wireless network encryption methods are Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) and Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) and WPA-2.

Change the default administrator name and password on your router or access point
If you have a router or access point, you probably used a default name and password to set up the equipment. Most manufacturers use the same default name and password for all of their equipment, which someone could use to access your router or access point without you knowing it. To avoid that risk, change the default administrator user name and password for your router. Check the information that came with your device for instructions about how to change the name and password.

Change the default SSID
Routers and access points use a wireless network name called a service set identifier (SSID). Most manufacturers use the same SSID for all of their routers and access points. We recommend that you change the default SSID to keep your wireless network from overlapping with other wireless networks that might be using the default SSID. It makes it easier for you to identify which wireless network is yours, if there is more than one nearby, because the SSID is typically shown in the list of available networks. Check the information that came with your device for instructions about how to change the default SSID.

Position your router or access point carefully
Wireless signals can transmit a few hundred feet, so the signal from your network could be broadcast outside of your home. You can help limit the area that your wireless signal reaches by positioning your router or access point close to the center of your home rather than near an outside wall or window.

I have a intellinet model 503693 router. my i phone connects automaticly when i am near (20 meters outside) how do i get it to request a password? the neighbours are using my internet connection.

Hi,
First let me give you steps how you can make your router secure from unauthorised access which your neighbours are doing
You need to login to the router setup page after connecting the router with pc via a cable

Connect to the Wireless G Broadband Router by entering http://192.168.1.254in the address field of your Web browser. Once you’ve logged in, the browser will display the administrator menu on the left-hand side of the screen, with the five configuration options — Wireless (Settings)

Encryption — Select "None," "WEP," "WPA," WPA2" or "WPA2 Mixed."
• WEP: Wired Equivalent Protocol.
• WPA: WI-FI Protected Access (WPA) is an intermediate solution for security issues. It uses Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP) to replace WEP.
WPA Authentication Mode — "Enterprise" uses an external authentication server (e.g., RADIUS) and EAP just as IEEE 802.1X does; "Personal" uses pre-shared keys without the need for additional servers. Both options will generate a master session key for the authenticator (AP) and supplicant (client station).
WPA Cipher Suite/WPA2 Cipher Suite — Choose either TKIP or AES.
Pre-Shared Key Format — Select passphrase or hex characters. Pre-Shared Key — Enter up to 128 characters.
Authentication RADIUS Server — Enter a port, IP address and password.

Unable to connect to internet through Wi Fi on Nokia E65

You need to "authenticate" the wireless meaning you need the password to the web signal. Your phone may have an internal software issue in which it prevents you from connecting to the internet. Contact your phone company to trouble shoot it or get a replacement phone.
