I have had a mackie onyx satellite preamp for over about 2 years and it has worked flawlessly for recording on my computer. A week ago my computer suddenly couldn't find the unit when I turned it on and the firewire connection light wouldn't come on. The firewire card and cable are fine. I un-installed the preamp and now I can't re-install it. It can't find any drivers for the Mackie. Also the hardware installation wizard can't see the .exe program on the installation disk which contains the drivers. What can I do???

You will have to contact Mackie support for help with this. Did your computer recently update itself? If so, many times, these updates are not reliable, and should only be performed if required. Otherwise, wait for stable releases from your PC manufacturer. If you did not update, then contact Mackie support for help with this. Might be a firmware upgrade available to solve this problem: MACKIE SUPPORT - OPTiC Master Tech Digital Analog Therapy Mackie Parts : Mackie Repairs

Did your computer recently update? If so, any changes to any drivers might be causing this issue. It's not good to regularly download and install Windows updates, as most are not stable releases. Download updates only after stable releases have been issued. Or, don't do the update at all, unless it's a security update.

You'll probably need to contact Mackie Support for this one. They might have to send you updated drivers or update the firmware on your unit to address this problem.

I am still having problems with the left ch. output on my Mackie Onyx 32-4. When you first turn it on there is no left channel output. But you can get it back by driving a source to the limit and the audio...

If it's not the cables that you are using, it could be a number of things. Bad solder connection or corrosion on one or more ribbon cables. Maybe a weak return contact on a 1/4 inch female jack. Try putting a signal into the mixer and then inserting a male 1/4 inch plug into the different jacks to find out which jacks disconnect the signal when inserted. Even when they are not used these jacks tend to become slightly corroded and the signal is lost. You can give the jacks a burst of contact spray and 'work' a male plug in and out of the jack a dozen times.

Firewire inputs do not work

Check in the computer "Device manager" if a PC with windows, and see if there are any devices with an yellow "X" through them- the port may have an interrupt conflict.

Then check audio properties of the system to make sure the devices are selected and enabled, and their volume level is up- even if you are operating through the Mackie software console.

If a Mac- check the Chooser to make sure that input device has been selected.

Hi. I have a Mackie onyx 1640i. 2 days ago it was working, but now the computer sees only 2 output channels. There was no shock, etc... Thx

Check the settings in your computer in the control panel "sounds and devices" under the "Voice" and "Audio" tabs. Check that all are set to the Mackie instead of the computers default input.

While the Mackie Onyx 1220i unit is plugged into my computer I can port the sound through to my headphones via the headphone jack on the console. When I listen to sound play for about 2 minutes I'll...

OK... first thing is to DUMP ALL anti-virus and Anti_spyware and real time defragging programs as these resource hogs **** processing away from teh sound generation. Also is you are recording at the same time, if your disk is fragmented requiring a lot of head movement to record the time lags can cause buffer underruns and break up of audio... and eventually having the audio program "crashing" due to lack of throughput.
When doing audio work suspend all the resource hogs like the above mentioned programs. It is a good idea when recording CD's as well.

What is the setup you are using. What mics (make and model). What are the settings for the channels? With this info, I should be able to assist.

Please update this.

Onyx 1640 shows connection but no audio recorded.

Sometimes Windows XP will seem to "forget" that you have Mackie drivers. In such cases you need to go into Hardware Manager, uninstall the drivers, then press F5 to check for hardware changes. It will find the drivers again and take you through the installation process. Sometimes this "forgetting" seems to be triggered by the order in which you turn on the computer and board. It seems that for the first version of the Onyx drivers I had to turn the board on first, then the computer. I have updated my Onyx drivers and now it seems that I must turn on the board after XP is loaded and ready to go. Otherwise Windows can't "see" that the board is attached and thus Sonar or whatever won't be able to record. Sometimes when this happens I can turn the board off and back on, then Windows sees it. However, when that fails I uninstall and reinstall the drivers as I described earlier and it always solves the problem.
