My son brought me a latitude d400 dell laptop and it needs a password in order to log in..I want to know if there is a way to reboot the computer to its original setting since I do not know the password to log in, or what can I do to get into it. Thank you.
I've had great results from dellsupport.com . They'll ask for a service tag number, or you can search by model. P.S.I'm not sure what OS your running but if you can't get in you probably don't know anyway. When you power it on, when the dell logo comes on and before the windows logo comes on push and hold the F12 key. That should pull up diagnostics as long as it has the original HD. There's an option to put it back to factory settings.I believe it also has a disable switch on the bios in case it's stolen. I'd have your son check with the seller. If that doesn't work try holding down the mute button while powering on. Hope this helps. If it does, please rate me, thanks.

If it si new, it might be prudent to run the included installation CD to reinstall the operating system from scratch. The install code is on the bottom of the laptop, and thweprocess is pretty simple to follow. Your son is probably the only one who knows the password if he messed with it before you got it. There is an application that can crack the password for the administrator (original person to turn on themachine), but you have to have another PC to look at this one, and there lies the rub. I suggest with what you have stated, to reinstall the operating system and put in your own administrator password for future reference. Hope that helps.

At the the log in challenge window type admisistrator hit enter if still unable to log in then do as the man said re-run install XP Pro when asked type in new password and make sure you do the same for the administrator also to close this common back door.
