There is a smart circuit in the battery. Is sounds liek your smart circuit has failed. This will not affect the function of hte battery at first, but you need to get it replaced. This is how windows tracks the battery life, condition, and keeps the battery at peak condition. There might be a "reinitialization" application that might have come with your battery as well (some high level batteries have this) and it will recondition the battery and reset the logic circuit on the battery. I would highly suggest replacing the battery though if you do not remember having this software package. The logic circuit can not be replaced, and is generally there to keep you from installing generic batteries into the dell battery box. I hope that helps you in understanding what those lights are..

I have the same problem with mine! I talked to Gateway and they have told me to recalibrate the battery. So I did what they said and it tells me my battery is over on it's voltage. I have had them send me a new battery, but now my 2nd battery is taking a **** not even 2 months after I got it.

I have the same problem. It will usually happen when I unplug my laptop after fully charging it. Since I haven't had the time to deal with fixing it I basically deal with it by unplugging and replugging the computer really quickly before it goes into sleep mode; once I have done this the battery will have "fallen out" since the computer does not register that it is even there. Then I just remove and replace the battery and when I unplug the computer the battery will be working fine. I now it is a bit of a hassle but it is an easy solution when you dont have time to lose your laptop while somebody somewhere inspects it for the full problem.

Well I wanted to come back here and post what ended up working for me. I relize this post is OLD, however someone may find it helpful. I had to update my bios to the latest version and it completely fixed the battery issue. Start with the oldest bios update and install them in order of oldest to newest. Then rerun the battery auto learn program in the bios.

My Gateway laptop, NE56R1u, shuts down automatically when unplugged even though fully charged?

Dear Leslie,

I had the very same problem with a HP Pavillion DV4 laptop and the problem was inside the battery - one of its cells became defective and the charge did not last more than a few seconds - it also showed a 100% charged icon but the battery was depleted in seconds.

Before buying a brand new battery you could check with a friend that has a similar laptop if he/she can lend you his/her battery for a few minutes and check whether the laptop keeps on or not with that other battery. In the case it remains on, it is the battery for sure, and you will need to buy a replacement one. Check the link below, for one option.

Hope you may find this information useful!

Gateway laptop Model No. NEW95 won't charge

If the main battery is not charging properly and you state the charger and battery are fine, then there is only one possibility, the charge circuits on the motherboard are defective, this is a very rare situation and I have seen it once in all the years of service, make sure the battery is not the problem because in most cases it is.

My laptop was one year old last december. my battery stopped charging the same week it became one year and the guarantee expired. having no exta time, i took the laptop to the store 5 days after...

I would strongly suggest the good old battery 'hard reset'...

1.) Turn off laptop
2.) Unplug it from power supply
3.) Hold down the power button for a minute
4.) Plug it back into the power supply
5.) Power it on and wait to see if the battery icon is showing up and charging

This has resolved a few of these ghost battery issues on some of my clients laptops! If that fails, please provide the exact model number of the Gateway laptop and which operating system you're using and we'll see if we can't find another fix.

Hope this helps,
Joe

My laptop is a gateway Model:MC7801u. I have had it since 2008 and have had constant problems with the ACadapter and battery. It randomly decides not to charge my battery and then my battery dies and the...

Some people have successfully reset the charging system with the following procedure:

  1. Shut down the computer
  2. Close the lid
  3. Unplug the AC adapter
  4. Remove the battery
  5. Plug in the AC adapter
  6. Open the lid and turn on the computer
  7. Log in to your user account as usual
  8. Shut down the computer again, and close the lid
  9. Unplug the AC adapter
  10. Put the battery back in
  11. Plug in the AC adapter, open the computer and start up again
The battery should now charge normally. If this process needs to be repeated any time soon, the small clock and parameter backup battery inside may have gone bad. I don't know where that is in this particular model. In some designs, it's accessible from the wireless card or memory compartment; in others it's somewhere under the keyboard.

Charging failure can be the result of a broken cable in AC adapter, often caused by yanking on the cable to unplug it rather than pulling on the plug body. Sometimes the adapter jack gets worn out or the solder connection inside the laptop breaks. In these cases, usually no light comes on when you plug in the adapter or the AC power indicator light is intermittent.

Also, if you have a Sanyo battery pack there are some issues with the battery management firmware. Gateway has a BIOS update to address the problem.

Hi,
Yes you are right, a defective battery.
It's always recommended that you use manufacturers endorsed hardware because of this fact!!
Return the battery and get a new one. when you get the new battery don't charge it, just use it until its dead and then recharge it. It will then hold 100% charge.

Good luck

Gateway MX8711 Battery Won't Charge

As long as the laptop still works on AC then your battery is probably dead. It is a few years old already so it probably wasnt far from the end of its useful life anyway.

Try not to drain laptop batteries down all the way to zero - Its best to always have some charge in them to extend the life.
