It's probably the colorwheel not the fan, can only be fixed by replacement.

Screen fade in and out, then picture scrambles when the fan turns off, the fan makes a really loud noise when starting.

sounds more like a color wheel issue rather than a fan. Can you verify where the sound is coming from?

We have bought a used toshiba tv 42hm66, and have no idea how old the bulb is... but is doing the following Fan noise at first, ran perfect, then it started just turning off,esp in Hi Def,then turned off...

Color wheel needs to be quiet/not loud --it spins much, much faster than a fan, so it sounds like a quiet whir when good. Else, probably the lamp.

Fan noise loud, bulb burst. Replaced with new bulb. Noise even louder! Unit shuts itself off.

the bulb may have burst from overheating from a fan not working to cool it down. and it can be replaced. it does take, however, a while to replace it because you have to take half of it apart. but make sure it's the fan first. take the lamp door off and remove the lamp. use something small and thin to push in the switch that the lamp door usually activates. turn the projector on and see if the lamp fan and the colorwheel (the multicolor glass disk) are spinning. if the fan spins, the noise may be from the colorwheel motor going bad. the fan can be purchased through an infocus authorized service center. check the website for the closest one. but the colorwheel for the x1 cannot be purchased seperately from the optical engine, and that costs a fortune. but here is the part number for the 80mm fan- 526-0152-00.

Makes a loud noise when it is turned on. Can't open it.

If it is making a loud humming sound it is probably getting weak and will have to be replaced. Is it doing it in all speeds? Motor replacement would probably not be worthwhile unless it is a very expensive unit. I'd opt to replace the unit.

Loud Humming Noise

Samsung is notorious for having the motor on the color wheel burn out. If the color on the tv starts to fade or shift tones when the rev'ing or noise is happening then you'll know its the color wheel. There are only two moving parts in this set, the color wheel and the fans. If you're smelling something, it could be either. Take the back off the set and put a piece of tape on the lamp door switch and turn the set on. Try to pinpoint the source of the noise. If its a fan, no big deal, Radio shack should have a replacement. If it sounds like its comming from under the set, dig a little deeper and try unhooking the color wheel motor, not as easy as I am making it sound but either way the fan is about $20 to fix and the color wheel is about $100. Sure beats a $400 tech bill. If you get stuck, comment back and I'll send pictures of the dismantle.

Dvd10 optoma projector makes a loud noise

Hi, I'm not sure if it's the same problem I had..
I had it on picture mute, for maybe 15 mins, which may not have been a good idea. While it was muted, it made a sparking sound, and then a very loud grinding noise. When turned off, the lound noise stops, and the fan continues as usual for about a minute. As soon as it's turned back on, the grinding noise is back. But the logo seemed to display ok.

I took it in for repairs, and they said they needed to replace the color wheel to fix the problem.

HELP HL-R5067W LOUD GRINDING/VIBRATING NOISE

noise you are hearing can be the fans inside with bad bearings and or what im assuming given the info you gave.More likely the motor inside the optics engine (color wheel) is making noise..This will also cause picture problems..very expensive to repair..

Big Screen gets loud, mad and turns off

without a model number, i can't be much help. if this is a newer dlp or similar tv, the fan is probably going out. some newer tv's have a fan that is part of the light assembly, some have a separate fan.. the loud whirring noise is usually caused by bad bearings or the blades of the fan may have become unbalanced, either way, the fan making the noise will need replacing. the color going is usually caused by the lcd or dlp overheating and/or the lamp overheating.

if the tv is out of warranty, remove the back panel, locate the fan making the noise, and search for a replacement. if you have a model number, i can check around and see if i can find the part number for you.

hope this helps,
