Check the jumpers on the old drive and see if its powering on or spining up! some of these usb adapters just dont work on old drives if all else faisl open your system and connect it to your pata bus if you have one! if not then use another computer to extract your data and put it on another storage media e.g. flash drives ext hardddisk memory card or dvd or cd disk!

Can I use a Bytecc BT-144 usb external floppy disk drive with an iMac running OS 10.10.1?

I'm not a Mac tech, but I wouldn't see why not. Floppy drives are kinda old school now. You may need a driver for the floppy. Check online and see what you can find. Download and install it.

Or you may have to plug the floppy in, then reboot, to get the Mac to recognize it, especially with a USB port. Some old Windozz machines were like that...maybe your Mac too????

Mac OS is very close to Linux/Unix systems, which have awful support for floppy drives. That's another possibility.

If your windows machine can't read the disk, makes me think the floppy drive is bad or you have corrupted files on the disk. Try a couple known good floppy disks on the Windoz box and see what happens. Or another removable floppy drive. They cost $5 to $10 now.

I am trying to trasfer a large amount of files from my macbook to a dell laptop. The mac will recognize the drive and i am able to backup and save files onto it, however when i plug the drive into the...

The problem most likely is the Dell does not recognize the MAC file format (HPFS), but the MAC will recognize the PC's FAT 32 file system.
First format the USB mass storage device using the Dell, format this device in FAT 32 not in NTFS because the MAC can read and write/copy PC format files but the Dell/PC cannot read MAC format files.
Then Safely remove this device, connect it to the MAC and copy the files onto this drive. When you connect this device to the Dell, you will be able to see the files.
Have fun.

First is the "Drive" formatted? It will not work, if it is a new drive, until it is formatted. And/Or "Initialized"? If it has data on it already then it may be faulty? the only way to check that is to try it on another machine... also are you 100% sure you have it connected right way around, I have made exactly that mistake, before, I learnt whats what. Also try another USB port, this sometimes works. Try the setup on another PC to check it is actually OK.

I am using SuperDuper to clone my 160GB MacBook Hard Drive to a 500GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue. My problem is that I cannot determine why neither the SuperDuper program nor the MacBook itself...

The Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB hard drive is formatted for PC, not Mac. The simplest way to get your MacBook to recognize this new drive--and therefore copy the files from your old drive--is to plug it in to a PC and format the drive. I was advised to format with FAT 16, as this would be recognized by my MacBook. Fortunately, the process was not that involved, since the Vista-driven PC found the drivers for the WD Scorpio Blue automatically. Once formatted, I safely removed the drive and plugged it into my MacBook via a USB port using a BYTECC Drive Mate. Magically, it now appeared on my MacBook Desktop and was recognized by the cloning software I was using, SuperDuper. Three hours later, the files on my old hard drive were successfully cloned onto the Scorpio Blue--except now I had an additional 364GB of storage space. Swapping out the old drive and replacing it with the new was not a big deal at all--just make sure you have the right screwdriver for the last task--a Torx #6. Mission accomplished.

Sandisk cruzer thumb drive

This just means it is trying to recognize the device. All you need to do is allow it to recogniz the device and find the proper drivers. You can put files in here by going into my computer and double clicking the mass storage device. Files can be draged or copied in here, then taken anywhere you need to go.

Copying files over to Laptop

It's possible to get Windows 98 to recognize the USB memory stick, but there will be several technical problems to deal with.

A much simpler way may be to remove the hard drive from the tower and connect it directly to the laptop with an external USB-to-IDE adapter. In this configuration your files can be copied directly from the old hard drive to the laptop. Depending on your comfort level with working on the internal parts of your computer, you may need assistance from someone with computer service experience to do this. One example of the device you need is the "Bytecc BT-200 USB to IDE Cable with Power Adapter"....or you can search online to find this or similar devices by using the search terms USB - Hard Drive - External - IDE - Adapter. They are generally available for under $20.
