Change private lan in modem or router and then try again. 168 is being automatically assigned by one of those devices

I pluged the belkin 54g into the modem were the internet comes from and 1 wire to the computer

hello,
typical setup: make sure everything is switched OFF, then, you will plug one side of the wire to the "WAN" port on your belkin and the other side of the same wire will go in the "LAN" port on the cable/DSL modem/device.
then you would take another wire and this time you will plug one side of the wire in the "LAN" port on your belkin router and the other side of the wire into your desktop/laptop computer.
1.first power on the cable/DSL modem, wait 20 - 30 seconds for the modem to go in ready state. 2. power on the belkin and wait another 15- 20 seconds for it to become ready. 3. finally power up your PC and everything should be good to go.
Note: if router is new and came with setup CD run that in the computer and follow instructions.

let me know if there are any issues.
Hope this helps, please vote.

Hi, Follow the steps below to reset and configure the router:

RESET:

At the back of the router you will find a small tiny hole (which says restore to factory default settings). Press the button with the help of a paper clip and hold it down for 30 seconds. After 30 seconds, please release the button and power off the router for 5 seconds then power the router back.

CONNECTIONS:

1. Connect a Ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN port of the router (isolated port).
2. Connect the computer to the router using any one of the 4 available ports. Please make sure that there is no direct connection between the modem and the computer (either using Ethernet cable or USB cable).
3. Power off the modem and the router after making the connections.
4. Power on the modem and wait for the lights, then power on the router.

RECONFIGURE:

1. Open the browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Safari).
2. Access the router, usually with http://192.168.1.1 or http://www.routerlogin.com.
3. Login to the router with the Username as "admin" and Password as "password" (please note that the Username and Password are case sensitive).
4. Click on 'Basic settings' from the left menu and select 'Use Computers MAC Address' from 'router MAC Address' section.
5. Click Apply.
6. Once it updates the settings then power off the modem and the router. Power on the modem and wait for the lights, then power on the router.

Conect the router?

1. Unplug your DSL modem’s power supply.

Find the cable connecting your modem and computer.
Unplug it from the modem and plug it into the gray port
on the Belkin Router.

If you are replacing an existing router, find the cable
connecting the computer and old router. Disconnect it from
the old router and plug it into the gray port on the new router.

2. Connect the new cable (provided in the box) to the yellow
port on the Router.

Plug the other end into the modem.

3. Plug in your modem’s power supply. Wait 60 seconds for the
modem to start up.

Plug the Router’s power supply into a wall outlet, and the
other end into the black port on the Belkin Router.

As the Router wakes up, lights will come on; recheck your
connections if the “power” and one of the “wired” lights
are not lit up in green after 20 seconds.

4. Locate the CD in this guide and insert it into your computer.
The Setup Assistant should appear automatically.
If it doesn’t, open the CD in My Computer and double-click on the
“Setup Assistant” icon.It will guide you through he rest of the setup.

Problems adding new MAC address

Ok... this is an easy fix..first, turn off all the equipment including any laptops with wi-fi. then TURN ON YOUR MAIN ROUTER FIRST. Secondly turn on the cable modem..be sure its connected to the already turned on router. This will establish the router as your address the cable modem will set up as the main mac address. Then go ahead and boot up any other routers, and computers and wifi... That should keep everything connected because the router will delegate all the addresses to everything and the modem should remain "happy" with the router addres..

Let me know if this helps... and if you need anymore help.

Keeps dissconnecting EVERYTHING

You did not mention which version your router is running (V3, V4, V5).

Iwould blame the connection loss on a flaw in the firmware. Go to thebelkin site and see if there is a new firmware available for you: http://www.belkin.com/support/article/?lid=en&pid=F5D9230-4&aid=8593&scid=222

Looking around I found some people had similar problems: http://cnet.nytimes.com/routers/belkin-wireless-g-plus/4505-3319_7-31489123.html

If this helped, then please leave a comment here, so others might find a solution as well.
