The answer is simple if you want to listen to mp3 on your system and you purchased dv290 dvd changer you also need dv290 sound processor as they were coded - for example you have dv250 system with dv250 chager and sound processor you are only going to be able to see dvds and cds if you swap your changer to dv290 (plays mp3, audio ,wma and dvds) you also need to purchase dv290 sound processor as well - no need to change your amplifier or tape deck (the ribbon on the tape deck will be compatibile)
the lower end units were incompatibile with higher spec changers same when it comes to EH series if you have eh780 sound processor you are only going to be able to plug 780 changer or lower 760 770 etc... but 790 will not work with it unless you get 790 sound proc
It could be down to the Region of the Player or the Laser is Failing. As it doesn't play CDs then I suspect the the Laser is Failing (almost failed if it plays a cleaner but not CDs).
Time to get a new one, probably. The laser for DVDs is different for CDs so the DVD laser or a component in that section has probably failed and at today's prices, get a new player with morre features for less than you paid for this one. You can keep it for CD playing. The fact that it plays CDs means most of the player works except the DVD laser circuit. You might look at the lasers with a magnafying glass (Unplug for 1 hour before that look) to see if you can see the 2 laser lenses and one is dirty. Not very likely fixable but it is a free try. Good luck. G
if the disc starts to rotate when helped by hand then you definately have a weak spindle motor. dvds spin faster than cds which gives more wear & tear to the motor. i've repaired these faults numerous times. hope this helps?
did you buy your system in adifferent region and moved with it to another? I heared something like some DVD players are region-locked. I could be wrong but google about region-lock... try this among others: http://dvd-player-software-review.toptenreviews.com/what-is-dvd-region-lock.html
Chances are, your DVD player uses one laser to read CDs, and a different laser to read DVDs (since Cds and DVDs are read at different wavelenghts of light). If the DVDs you're trying to watch work properly in other DVD players, it probably means that the DVD laser is dirty, damaged, or burned out. Though you can try cleaning the laser (use Google for suggestions on how to do this, or check the Audiovox website), you will most likely have to get the DVD player repaired, or buy a replacement.
Many of the newer CD/DVD players sold today use a single combination laser, which reads both CDs and DVDs, which means that when the laser fails, it will not work at all. Wish I had better news for you, but I guess that the only consolation you have is that your Audivox player still works with CDs...
