Working well but has a persistant almost inaudable intermittant scratching noise from within somewhere near the scratch pad. sounds like a fine file being moved against a thin piece of plastic.

Oh well, It can be a noise of your hard disk or the processor if it's too heated.
Or It can be your internal mic not your's of course the laptop's mic Here's a solution goto start menu if you use windows xp then all programs\accessories\entertainment and volume control. Open that volume control and click advance controls in options. Now lower the volume of mic or mute it.Hey that's not so strange ok i know you don't use it anyway...

no don't replace the hard drive, you shouldn't have to if youre playing the dvd straight from the disc itself... well first off, make sure it's not getting bumped around and it's sitting flat... also make sure the dvd's your using aren't scratched or dirty... if everything like that is fine then you might just make sure that you're not running too many programs at once while your computer is playing the dvd...
Log into your router and change the channel and see if that helps. Failing that try rebooting the router to factory settings and deleting your connection from the laptop. Then start from scratch again...Hope this helps...Please let me no...
Sounds like the touch pad is not working anymore. try using a USB mouse and see if that works. also, see if you can reinstall the touch pad software to fix that.
