Automatic ice dispenser on Kenmore side by side freezes up

We don't like our ice crushed, but when it freezes up it will only crush and then wont dispense ice at all. We remove and clean out all of the frost and ice that has accumulated and it works great for about 2 days then the whole process starts over. Can anyone help?

PS: I don't know the model #. It's a Kenmore, black and about 5 years old.

Probably the trap door where ice dispenses out is not sealing tightly causing frost buildup

SOURCE: Ice dispenser only dispenses crushed ice

THE WAY A DISPENSER CHANGES FROM CUBES TO CRUSHED ICE IS BY RAISING AN ARM THAT RUNS ALONG THE BOTTOM OF THE ICE BIN. IF IT SETS FOR A LONG TIME, IT CAN GET A BUILUP OF FROST OR ICE THAT KEEPS IT FROM MOVING. PULL THE ICE BIN OUT AND TRY TWISTING THE END OF THE ARM MANUALLY. IT SHOULD OPEN A DOOR AT THE FRONT OF THE BIN THAT WOULD ALLOW THE ICE TO BYPASS THE CUTTER ASSEMBLY.
ALSO,WITH THE ICE BIN REMOVED, PUSH THE DOOR SWITCH BUTTON CLOSED BUT KEEP THE FREEZER DOOR OPEN. WHERE THAT ARM GOES IN THROUGH THE BACK WALL, CHECK FOR MOVEMENT OF A ROD UPWARD WHEN YOU CALL FOR CUBED ICE. IF YOU HEAR A LOUD HUM BUT THE ROD DOESN'T MOVE, YOU MAY NEED TO REPLACE THE SOLENOID ASSEMBLY IN THAT MODULE.

SOURCE: Kenmore side-by-side only dispensing crushed ice

Hi blkshop,
Most likely the problem you are having is with the crushed ice solonoid. It is located in the back of the freezer behing the icebucket. The little metal arm from the icebucket goes into a hole, the hole is part of the solonoid. To make sure the problem is with the solonoid, first take the icebucket out and look at the little metal arm on the bottom. When you lift it, it will open for crushed or cubed ice in the bucket dispencer hole. If it works properly then the solonoid is bad.
This repair is sometimes a really hard repair, because it is so hard to get all the stuff out of the way to replace the solonoid. You have to remove the icebucket holder and most likely the icemaker, and on some models you will have to remove the fan and several other pieces to get to it. If you feel like trying the repair let me know, I can ship you the part, I keep almost everyone of those on hand, all I would need is your model and address. My number is (865)945-3808. or my email is [email protected] . Thanks and I hope this will FixYa. Michael Anderson

SOURCE: Ice dispenser is stuck in crush mode

Carriage that moves ice bucket rod up is frozen. It's right by the auger drive mote on the left- square hole. Remove bucket and try to free it with your finger. If no luck take hair dryer until you can move it up and down.

Ice maker crushes ice but wont dispense Crushed ice

Good Afternoon Friend,

I understand that the ice maker in your Frigidaire refrigerator, model# FRS23H7CS, is crushing your ice, but will not dispense the crushed ice. It sounds like the dispenser is possibly jammed. Follow the following steps for a possible resolution:

1)The ice has melted and frozen around the auger due to infrequent use, temperature fluctuations, and/or power outages. Remove the ice container, thaw, and empty the contents. Clean the container, wipe dry, and replace it in the proper position. When new ice is made, dispenser should operate.

2)Ice cubes are jammed between the ice maker and the back of ice container. Remove the ice cubes that are jamming the dispenser.

3)Ice cubes could be frozen together. Use the dispenser often so that cubes do not freeze together.

4)The ice cubes are hollow or smaller than normal. The ice & water filter cartridge could be clogged. Replace the filter cartridge. Dispensing system operates best at 20 - 100 psi water pressure. Well water pressures should fall within this range.

If the above does not work, I suggest resetting your appliance, by either unplugging it or shutting the power off at your home's circuit breaker, for 3-5 minutes. Turn the power back on and try dispensing crushed ice. I ask that you please follow up with a comment on the post, at your convenience, to advise if further troubleshooting is needed or if your appliances status has changed successfully.

    -Best Regards-

Ice maker dispenses crushed ice in the cube setting. Water and crushed ice are fine.

Typical of a switch failure / control module failure so it sticks on the crushed ice setting or the crushing mechanism is u/s and wont turn off. Call a service engineer asap.

Dispenses crushed ice and will not dispense ice cubes

You have a solenoid switch which switches the dispenser back and forth from crushed to cube. It could be stuck or not working or the parts connecting it could be disconnected or broken. You will have to observe to see if any parts are moving and if any noise is coming from the solenoid

Ice dispenser will not switch back to cubed from crushed

Had the same problem, dispenser stuck on crushed ice, even when cubed ice is selected.  There is a magnetic switch behind the panel where the motor for the ice dispenser is.  It gets water in it and freezes so it is not free to go up and down.  It is always down for crushed, but for cubed ice, the magnet pulls it up.  when it's frozen with ice, all you'll get is crushed.  You'll have to defrost it.  You can defrost the whole freezer, but better to just remove the ice dispenser and defrost that. Three 1/4'' bolts hold secure it.  You'll have to unplug the wires from the back of the freezer to remove the unit. The just let it defrost and dry. You can remove the switch from the panel and dry it out too.   I've had to to this several times and am looking for a solution to keeping water out of the thing so it won't freeze again. Has anybody solved that?

Ice maker is crushing ice when cube ice button is on

We've had a similar problem, possibly the same, with our LG in-door ice maker. Whether cubed ice or crushed ice is selected, it crushes the ice.

We found that there is a little lever on the inside of the door, on the lower right behind the ice bin, which freezes in the down position. This is a literal "freeze up", as a block of ice forms in the little well under this switch and eventually freezes the switch in place. Since the switch needs to go up to provide cubed,.. we only get crushed. On 3 separate occassions we've thawed and chipped out (carefully) this little ice dam and gotten cubed ice capability back for a few weeks. At which point it freezes again. I have no idea why water collects there in the first place.

Ice dispenser only dispenses crushed ice

You may not need to replace the solenoid.  If you hear the hum, and not a loud click and don't see then rod move, it may be frozen with ice.  Test it manually with your hand, it should be free  to move up and down.  If not, then it is frozen with ice.  Remove the ice dispenser and let it thaw and dry out.  You should then be able to move to rod and it will work fine, at least until it freezes again.  Anyone know how to prevent it from freezing up? Its a continual problem for me
