Is there a safety limit switch on the parking brake of a Gravely ZT50? Battery is good but wont start.

I have a Gravely ZT50 that has had issues starting before. I suspected a safety switch on the parking brake, but can not locate one. I can hear the pto engage and disengage when i pull the switch, I jumped the seat switch harness just to be sure that wasnt the problem...is there a limit switch somewhere on the parking brake?

SOURCE: Can malfunction of PTO or other safety switches prevent start up of mower

You didn't state the model or brand of tractor, but usually the way the cranking circuit work is, from the "S" terminal of the ignition switch, the circuit runs to the PTO switch, if it's in the OFF position, the circuit then runs to the pedal switch, if it's in the DOWN (or brake on) position it then runs to the solenoid. On other tractors, from the ignition switch, the circuit runs to the pedal switch first. (The seat switch isn't used in the cranking circuit).

Any switch can go bad, but I would more likely suspect the pedal switch or loose connection at either switch. (But it could actually be the PTO switch).

Try tracing the circuit from the "S" terminal of the ignition switch through the PTO or pedal switches to the starter solenoid. You may get lucky and find something obvious.

If you find nothing, try jumping across the pedal or the PTO switch (only two terminals are used in the cranking circuit, trace back to ignition switch for the incoming, outgoing is usually directly adjacent). Jumpering will take these out of the circuit and tell you if either is bad internally.

Lastly, there's always the possibility that the ignition switch is bad. (Doesn't happen all that often, but it's suspect as well). Jumper from "B" terminal to "S" terminal will take it out of the circuit.

Craftsman R 1000, no sound when turn key, all wires good, battery good, connections good, fuse good, thinking solenoid but mower is only 2 years old. stumped, looking for suggestions. thanx JHESS

Engine crank requires PTO off and Park brake on. Check battery voltage is >12.3 VDC. Check voltage across solenoid contactor terminals (two large wires) is battery voltage. Then check solenoid control (coil) leads (or single lead and ground) is battery voltage when ignition key is in start position. No voltage at solenoid control leads implies safety switch (brake or PTO) issue.

Gravely ZT 60 HD won't start, no sound at all, battery is good.

Zero turn mowers in general require the following.

  1. PTO off.
  2. Steering levers to neutral position.
  3. Parking brake engaged.
A good habit to learn is; When a zero turn won't crank, cycle all the start engine interlocks. Move park lever off/on, steering levers out/in, PTO on/off.

And a simple basic electrical check is; With key in run position (engine not running), you should hear the electric clutch engage/disengage when PTO switch moved ON/OFF.

Craftman 18 hp won't start with key

Check Battery. If headlight equipped turn key to headlight on position and see if headlights are lit. No light dead battery dead tractor,

Charge battery. If after charging weak or no start forget the battery and get new, Life of battery is two to three years,

If battery good make sure that parking brake set and blades are not engaged. Safety lockout will prevent tractor from cranking. The tracker has a safety interlock on the seat that requires a body warm or cold sitting on the seat if the parking brake is not set. The seat switch is known to fail. Try bouncing on the seat?

OK if battery OK and seat is sat or park brake set we can assume the safety interlock circuit is disabling the start circuit.

1996 dodge stratus will not turn over my daughter could not get the car in park to turn it off , disconnected battery , reconnected wont start but has power

A safety device called the "neutral safety switch" will not allow you to start your car unless it is in Park or Neutral. If you start the car in neutral be careful it doesn't roll by applying the park brake. Then service the shifter-clutch to repair.
