When I put a DVD in the machine it says FAIL. I have the Liteon LVW-5104 DVD Recorder
I have the 5104 - and thru Lite-On's suggestion, it was suggested to get a "professional quality" DVD drive cleaner disc, use it and try recording/playback again. It works, but not for long. I live right on the ocean in Hawaii and there's a lot of salt in the air... consequently I have to clean the laser lens quite frequently, but it does seem to do the trick. Seems cleanliness is key with these things....
My liteon lvw-5104 recently started not reading disk saying "invalid disk" or "failed". I did as someone suggested and unplugged it over night, where as they suggested for 30 minutes. This did not resolve my problem. Then I read somewhere to put foil or copper sheeting between the units (I had my vcr sitting on top of my liteon dvd recorder) and do you know this worked! At least for now it is (knock on wood). I hope it continues to function properly. What I used instead of foil was a chrome cookie sheet, it is flat and thicker than foil. I did not have anything on hand that was copper.
I have the LVW 5005 and was having a similar problem. Unplugged it tore it apart (looking if anything looked physically wrong) plugged it back in and it worked (and still is). Try unplugging it, letting is sit for 1/2 hour and plugging it back in. Might get lucky.

I have had the same problem with my LVW 5005. No matter what dvd I place in the drive, it hums and tries to read the disc then the screen says FAIL.
I think I have used this thing about 10 times. It does it with brand new dvds to play back too.
any ideas before I trash this?
I have the same problem with LiteOn LVW 5104 trying to record using DVD+R and DVD+RW. It will appear to record for several minutes, then stop and display FAILED on the LED display. I've tried Memorex and Imagine disks
I have used the console for about a year recording our churches services onto DVD and about a month ago the unit began failing to read any disc I place into the unit.

my lvw-5005 only now playback dvd-rw and dvd+rw, used to playback everything.
Lite on LVW-5006 Door won't open DVD trapped inside. How do I get the door open and does this mean it is forever broken?
