Message to change battery or connect AC - Compaq Presario 2140US Notebook

  • tlkapusta Aug 26, 2009

I have no day to day experience with Laptops

    Just acquired it without manuals.

When plugged in after message, Charging Icon said 7%
I May be reading Icon message wrong: It says something like Charging Remaining: 7%. I assumed battery was 93% charged. Maybe its only 7% charged and message just means battery needs to be charged. Or Battery is at end of Useful life

    Please clarify

    Thank you

When does this happen? It is a normal message when the battery reaches the charge limit.

Notebooks are infamous for losing battery life quickly. Battery life is drained rapidly by always being connected to the Internet even when you are not using it. Disable your Internet when not in use and dim down your brightness to save battery power. When battery life is tested, the manufacturer is NOT connected to the Internet and they have the brightness setting turned down. That is why battery life may be advertised as lasting longer than it seems to be lasting you. You are going to have to plug in and always have a back-up battery. I had the same thing happen to me, but it is the nature of the beast..the price you pay for portability. I hope this helps you! - CBR2009

This means that your battery has very little remaining power. If you just charged the battery it means your battery is going bad. Replace the battery.

Is there a software that is associated with my sonny battery that will make it charge again

Hi there,

If you plug in your AC adapter to your laptop to charge the battery and get the "plugged in, not charging" message then try the following solution:

  • Disconnect AC adapter
  • Shutdown laptop
  • Remove laptop battery
  • Connect AC adapter
  • Power on laptop
  • Click the Startup Menu
  • Type Device and select Device Manager
  • Under the Batteries category, right-click Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery and select Uninstall.
  • Shutdown laptop
  • Disconnect AC adapter
  • Insert laptop battery
  • Connect AC adapter
  • Power on laptop

If you follow these steps and find that your laptop still does not charge then consider replacing the laptop battery itself.

Hope to have been of assistance,
    Thanks.

I have a Simon XT which I installed about two weeks ago. I keep getting a system low battery message when I press the status button on the console. I had a new battery shipped and I installed it about 24...

Call your Central Station and put your account on test if it is a monitored system.

Power down the system. Disconnect the battery, then the AC adapter. Then plug the battery in first, then the AC adapter. Plugging the AC adapter in first can cause the low battery message.

if that doesn't work, with the battery disconnected, measure the voltage of the battery with a multimeter. If it reads less than 5.4 volts, the battery is bad. Bad out of the box batteries are not too uncommon.

Next, check the charging voltage from the panel. Measure DC voltage from the leads that connect to the battery. They should read around 6 Volts DC. If the charging circuit is bad, it will cause a low battery trouble and the console will need to be repaired or replaced.

    Hope this helps.

Certain models talk to a chip in the adapter, sounds like this one has gone bad. At this point you can live with, buy a new one or pick up a used. This is a fairly popular model and you should be able to locate one from a dead laptop.

When you received the system as out of the box and you get this message "The AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determind" let the Dell tech service know that they sent you a wrong or incorrect type of AC Adapter.
If this message not was not appearing before it just happened recently try to download and install the latest BIOS version from the support site.
If all fails remove the batt and check if laptop can work with AC adapter alone, because issues like AC not determine may not charge the battery and laptop may not work with AC as well, maybe laptop is already running on battery power.

When the message about optimal performance comes up, are you given an option to press F1(or some other key) to continue? That is normally the case. If you see that, press the key and let it start normally. Once it has started completely, do a full shutdown. Disconnect the AC adapter from the computer and from the wall. Let the system 'rest' for a few minutes. Connect the adapter to the AC power and check to make sure the GREEN led light on the transformer is lit. If it is, connect the power supply to the computer and start it.

Good luck and please let me know how it works oout for you.
