I have a microsoft wireless laser keyboard 6000 v2.0 and i would like to upgrade it to be compatible with the microsoft vista operating program on my laptop

The wireless dongle plugged into the computer is on a specific frequency and you wont be able to peer it with a different mouse. However if it is a Bluetooth and not wireless, you can pair another Bluetooth mouse no problem.
Windows Vista and Windows 7 may need updated drivers made for these windows version.for your device to be able to work properly. Sometime the manufacture for older device will not make drivers for the newer windows. They want to sell newer product instead of updating the older mouse.driver. Go to the manufacture web site of you mouse if there is an updated version for your mouse for Vista.
Visit the official software download site at Microsoft:You'll want to select your operating system, 32- or 64-bit then your language. This should be the same software that came on your install disc.
Note: to find out if you have 32 or 64 bit windows in Vista and 7 click on Start then right-click Computer and select properties. A window will come up with that information. If you have XP you would have to go out your way to get 64-bit so if you aren't sure then you have 32-bit.
I have a Microsoft Wireless Notebook Laser Mouse 6000 that also has a very short range. The only solution I've found so far is to plug the receiver into a USB extention cord and run the cord toward the mouse.

Maybe, It doesn't work because the driver/application you installed is
for other versions of operating system. I am also using windows 7 like
you so don't you worry, You can still use your old installer/driver from
other versions of operating systems. Just remember that before
installing any program in a windows 7 Operating System Computer, Use
"troubleshoot compatibility". Right Click the Icon of your program
installer/application first, then choose "troubleshoot compatibility". This will
allow you to choose on what type operating system your program will run.

The software might not be compatible. but for you to use the wireless keyboard and mouse you don't need a software just plug the wireless adapter and sync the keyboard and mouse . it will start working
Try going to Control Panel, then click on keyboard and Keyboard Properties will come up. Then click on Key Settings and then click on Restore Defaults. Hopefully that will do it. Had a similar problem with an MS 4000 KB.
hit the reset button on the wireless receiver (oval button)
THEN
hit the small white reset button on back of wireless keyboard (it's called Connect Channel)
