In general your stuck with the video format the camera manufacture is using. You can't change the camera but you can convert the video files to a different format after you get the files onto a computer.

2 free converters that I use are "autogk" and "virtual dub". These are easy enough to find and download on google. autogk is the easiest because you can just use the default settings and not really need to know what your doing other then picking out how big you want the resulting files to be.

The biggest trick here, is to know what format your camera is using and ensure the tools can convert to that format.
