If you have a 1/6 H.P. then that is 124.5 watts (746x.166= 124.5)
One ton of capacity equals 12,000 Btu/h
(also one Btu/h is equal to 0.293 watts so...One ton = 3.516 Kilowatts)
so: 124.5/ .293= 425 Btu
there fore, if one ton of capacity is 425 Btu/hr divided by12000 Btu/hr/ is= .0354 ton
(425/12000=.0354)

I would try to match the physical size more to the one you're replacing. A one ton coil is going to be a lot larger.
Just in case anyone is reading this 10 year old question, the 1/6 HP motor referred to in this question, that is the outdoor fan motor (not the compressor) A CK36-10 is a 36000 BTU unit and it is 3 ton.

thankyou for your very good answer, so if i replace my rusted out evaporater coil I would purchase a 0ne ton evaporator,as i dont think they come any smaller, would this be ok?
