LCD black in shooting mode only

I cannot see any image in shooting mode, although I can see all the icons, menus, etc. Also, I can review pictures already shot.

I have the same problem with mine...i can see all the icons, but the lcd is black. My memory card is new, and i have no picture on it, so i can not verify if in view mode the screen would work...Please let me know if you have any solution for that issue!

  • MARGOD Mar 14, 2008

YES I DO HAVE THIS PROBLEM OR SIMILAR.

    1. SWITCHING THE POWER ON OF THE CAMERA AND OPENING THE LCD ONLY SHOWING THE ICONS AND THE SCREEN STAYS BLACK.

    2. THIS STARTED FEW MONTHS AGO, I NOTICED THAT I HAD TO SWITCH IT OFF & ON AGAIN AND THE PROBLEM WILL BE SOLVED,BUT ONE DAY RECENTLY IT WOULDN'T START THE SCREEN & THE SCREEN STAYS BLACK SHOWING ONLY THE ICONS.

    3. I HAVE NOTICED THAT PUT THE CAMERA ON & OFF LOOKING AT THE LENS WITH A MAGNIFING LENS ON THE VERY INSIDE, WHICH I THINK ITS CALLED THE IRIS IT IS NOT OPENING & THIS I NOTICED OTHER DAY THAT THE LENS WHEN IT COMES OUT THE IRIS WILL OPEN. I THINK IT IS A LENS PROBLEM.

THANKS VERY MUCH FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ MY COMMENT.

I WOULD BE VERY GRATEFULL IF YOU COME TO A SOLUTION.

I know this is very old post, but this may help others with a similar problem. A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).
To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see the following for further info and a simple fix that may help:

My Canon A610 just had the same thing happen too! I e-mailed Canon support and they "offered" a refurbished different model for $100. Otherwise they told me to send it to them, they'll give me an estimate of what the repairs will cost. Cost??? This is Canon's issue, Their problem! MY cost should be $0.00!! I've been a Canon customer for years! I'm buying a Nikon!

Defective CCD. Just happened with our A610 as well. Oddly enough just had our Canon ZR85 camcorder repaired about 1 month ago (for free) due to this same problem. Sounds like Canon isn't as forthcoming with the A610 tho. We called today and they said $100+ to repair or replace, but the following link seem to indicate that if you're persistent you can get them to fix for free. Now the battle begins ...

I have a Canon PowerShot SX 10 IS. In Manual mode shows only black screen with icons. In Auto mode everything is fine.

Dear Olia,
Just a quick check on your camera. You have a focus issue so check the settings for the ISO - increase the value, eg. 800 or above and reduce the shutter speed. You can do that by the quick access dial (wheel) facing you. There are four direct access menus in a criss-cross direction. One is assigned to shooting mode - single, multi, timed etc. The other direction will have macro, standard, telephoto etc. the 3rd direction will (towards right) will take you to the ISO settings and the last will take you to the shutter speed settings.

you manipulate the ISO and shutter speed and see your screen will brighten up and the subject will be clear. Refer to the picture attached.

LCD Display is Black

the image in the LCD monitor will darken in strong sunlight or bright light. This is normal occurrrence in device CCDs and does not contitute a malfunction. This image will not be recoded when shooting still photos, but it will be recorded wihen shooting movies.Read you owner manual and adjust the MENU, according with your o. manual.Otherwise you must go the repair shop
God bless you

Why wont the image come up on my LCD on the D40 when i turn on the camera

Because it's not supposed to. The LCD on the D40 is for menus, shooting info, and image review. It takes pictures the same way SLRs have done for half a century, allowing you to view and frame through the viewfinder. Only more recent dSLRs (and not all of them) have the Live View feature allowing you to use the LCD instead of the viewfinder.

In shoot mode screen is 3/4s black no view

If you can see the normal icons on the LCD but not an image, you probably have a bad image sensor (CCD). See this link for your options.

Nikon d60 does not allow me to view image whilst taking a picture

The D60 does not have a Live View capability. The monitor is used for shooting info, menus, and image reviews. It cannot be used to display the image while shooting. You must use the viewfinder for that, unless you connect the camera to a computer using the Camera Control Pro software from Nikon.

I can't use the video or view the picture on the screen

The D50 doesn't shoot video. It also doesn't have a Live View mode so you can't preview pictures on the screen. The screen is used for menus and image review.

Similar problems as other readers. camera turns on but no real time image on LCD screen. LCD contiues to show settings i.e. full auto mode etc. But I can view pictures already taken. Thanks

The XTi and prior EOS models have not capability to see the live image to be shoot on the screen. Only the image after taken can see on the screen. Other images also using the view mode.

If you can't review the images, eve if the display is turned off, just after they are taken, maybe the "Review time" is set to "off". Go to settings, 3th tab, Review time and set the desired setting.

LCD won't work in shoot mode, but work in playback mode

It's unusual that you can review pictures, but not see the menu. Take a picture with the camera. If this picture shows up black, then it's probably be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon will fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:
