You need to program it.. or you may try open the first try so that it will automatic print on the 2nd try

Hp laserjet4 error 51

That's a "beam detect error"
Could be bad laser/scanner or DC controller.

It's an old printer. It might cost you more to repair it than to replace it.
Let it go out with dignity.

Will HP laserjet4 plus print on card? If so how?

Depends on the weight (thickness) of the card. Assuming it's not too thick, feed it in through the manual tray (the flip-down tray on the front).

Hp laserjet4 plus. smears the paper with new toner.

My sentiments exactly...although you may try shaking it vigorously left to right 5 times, then up and down twice. This sequence has proven extremely effective for me.

Printer is dark

Go to Start > printers and faxes> right click on the laserjet4 icon>
properties > click on printing preferences on the first page > click advance on the next page > under Graphics, you will see print quality. Change it to either 600x600 or 1200x1200. The higher the number, the darker the print.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.

Paper traveling too slowly through system

These do run slow 4 pages a minute, they were fast in their day.
Check driver settings on pc that paper type is set as normal paper.

Otherwise it is the paper having high moisture content or machine needs a new "baker" aka the fuser assembly rendering it unecomical for repair (lower orange roller will be creased or upper roller losing its coating)

HP LaserJet4

In the printer driver, make sure you have the paper sizes set correctly  etc. Go over all the basics first.

Make sure that the options set under the "Device Settings" and "Advanced" tabs are relevant to your media and page sizes.

The chances are a setting in the driver has been changed by mistake.
