So you are connecting the DSL Modem output to the D-Link's LAN port 1, right? In this case, you should connect the DSL Modem output to the D-Link's WAN Port, which is between the power input and the LAN outputs.
If it doesn't work that way, check this out:

Are you referring to the network cable? The cable is attached to the ethernet port of the modem, which is then attached to the LAN port 1 on the D-Link router. The modem actually says DSL Router on the sticker on the back, its a Westell model 6100.
Also the same problem occurs when we substitute the D-Link Router with a Netgear Wireless Router, WNR2000. So that would be Outlet > DSL Modem > Netgear Router > 2 desktops and a laptop. In that case the network cable is run from the Ethernet port of the DSL Modem to one of the Ethernet ports of the Netgear router, not the port that says "Internet". When I do that, the computers don't connect.
So your connection is: Phone outlet -> DSL Modem -> D-Link Router -> 2 desktops Is that right? what input from the D-Link are you connecting the DSL Modem to?
