Did you remember to open the door for the paper to exit? Otherwise, if there's no paper jam check the paper path for debris; the sensor(s) might be gunked up.
You refer to a document jam then you mention fanning new paper but that refers to a paper jam.Which one is the problem? What does the screen say? If document jam then its your originals you are copying. If paper jam then its the paper in the machine. I cant help you any more because your do not state the make or model. Please repost with a lot more detail. Cheers
The half circle light comes up for five reasons.
1) There is a paper jam in the printer.Remove the cartridges and properly check for any big or small piece of paper jam.
2) The other reason for half circle light is there is no paper in the printer.Check if the tray is empty, fill it with papers and then see.
3) The cartridge in the printer is not fitted correctly or cartridge is bit tilted.check the cartridges and reinsert it properly.
4) The other reason for this half circle light is that the cartridge is empty and it needs to be replaced.remove and replace the cartridge.
5) Also try this reset procedure.Remove all the cartridges from the printer. Then turn the printer off by directly unplugging the power cord of printer from wall outlet.
Then after one minute reconnect the power cord to wall outlet and turn the printer ON.
Then reinsert the cartridges one by one.then check. If still the same problem then follow steps 1 to 4.

Remove all of your paper and using a can of compressed air, blow out the entire paper path. Quite often either a small piece of either paper or dust will block the sensor.
Hi gpeirce:
Ghosting is the result of a worn fuser assembly. Try to print a half page by printing a document and then try to open the top while the paper is going under the toner cartridge. You have to listen to the paper moving through the paper path. You will see that the paper has print on it but not the hole document. This will tell you if the toner cartridge is bad or the fuser assembly.
If the supply lights are not lit, then you may have a paper jam. Check the rear cover. Also sometimes paper jam lights come on even though the paper has not jammed, just misfed from the cassette. Please let me know any further details.
hi lorraine3 -
I hope you didn't 'throw it out the window!' just for a future quick ref, here are a couple fast links to hp support docs about paper jams and blinking lights that might help:
canon i960 -three flashing orange lights (paper jam error) but no paper is jammed. The print cartridge will not slide to center either-- I have tried to get the printer into service mode, but cannot get there because the orange lights never stop flashing.
