Bought a Alpine PDX1.1000. Hooked it up based on MFG specifications. Amp has a 1.0 to 1.0 and 1.0 - 8.0V switch. Running an Eclipse head unit with 8V. when wsitwhed to the 1-8V steeing I ma getting very little sound even with the gain all the way up. With the switch in the 1.0 setting I am getting lots of hard hitting sound. Just fearful I will damage something. I have also changed head units out with the same results.

As long as the gain is adjusted properly for the input, there should be no problems with the amp.
The head unit preamp output is probably a little low or there is too much voltage drop on the RCA's. It doesn't take much of a drop when you are working with such a low level to begin with. That's one reason that Alpine gives you the option to select an input level.
It's also possible that the input sensitivity of the Alpine is slightly high. Electronic components usually have a nominal value and their actual value can range up to 20% from that nominal. But again, you have a gain adjustment to insure that the amp is not overdriven. Make sure that it's set so there's no distortion and you should be OK.

mostly because the subs in the back are probley using more amps than the ones in the front in the front should be used mostly for vocals and your bass in the trun so maybe trying to unhook the ones in the front from the sub and just leave then hooked up to the cd player where you can hear the vocals really good and leave your subs in the back hooked up to the amp
You did not specify your install specifics, but the trouble is probably the head unit "remote turn-on" lead. Some head units will have both a power antenna and a remote lead. If you inadvertently wired the amp turn-on to the power antenna lead, it can cause the problem you described.
If you head unit does not have a dedicated remote lead, the best solution is to wire the amp turn-on terminal to a switched accessory 12V source.
Check the 12v wire running from the battery to the amplifier. Also the sony explode is a garbage subwoofer compared to the Alpine.. sony (they say 1200w max but its more like 100w to power the thing) Amp could be going. Is the amplifier hot when running. If there is a burnt smell comming from the amp, its the amplifier
If you have the RCA's running from the head unit to the amp, and the speaker wires running to the speakers then you have it hooked up right. Now If you still don't have any sound then you need to look at the amp to make sure that you have a green light. Still I would use 8 or 10 gauge power wire and then the same for the ground wire, make sure that you have a good ground.
I'll assume that you've checked the amplifier's on-board fuses.
With your multimeter set to DC volts, the black meter lead on the ground terminal of the amp (not on the point where the ground wire connected to the vehicle) and the head unit on (so the amp will have remote voltage applied), touch the red lead alternately to the B+ and remote terminals of the amp. If the voltage is below ~11 volts, you need to check the wiring feeding whichever line is too low.
first check that the subwoofer function on the actual head unit is turned up,second check that the gain on the amp is at bout half way then check that it is on a lp (low pass setting)
then check that the boost on the amp is turned up.

The Alpine has two tigger wires when it turns on. One is an AMP TURN ON wire (blue/white) and a PWR ANT wire (blue) and that wire only comes on when using the radio or an optional HD radio unit ... When it was installed/connected . someone hooked your amp turn on wires for your "full range amps" to the PWR ANT wire. And the sub amp trigger is either hooked correctly to the AMP TURN ON WIRE or somewhere else, it probably shouldn't be... Check it. Amp triggers should all be to the blue/white wire from your alpine. Warning: Alpine trigger wires, are very easy to mess up they supply a very limited amount of power.
lol i had the exact problem that you are having with my alpine. The solution is taking the blue cord that was inside the vehicle (forgot what cord it was) and actually connecting it with the other blue cord thats different makes the factory amp read the cd player and ta-da it works. crazy isn't it
