Weird category. Seems OS- or program-specific enough.
The exception codes are supposed to give you insight into what's going on, (Intel exceptions C000 00029 and E043 4F4D in the context of Vista or your CPU in particular, say) but perhaps you should try the Vista equivalent of WinXP's RunAs options, where you can run them as older applications and dodge some incompatibilities.
Similarly, you might want to create a VM (or runtime jail; many, many options to be had there...) and try it in that context, so that if the program's spoiling things at least your system won't need to worry or crash. The easiest thing of course is to find updates of those programs that promise to play well with Vista.
