DELL Inspiron 5150 won't charge the battery or run off the AC power supply. Tried a known good AC supply from another DELL - same symptoms. I replaced the battery with new. The system works fine with a recharged battery, but won't recharge it or won't work once the battery is drained.

As you say the system is 4 years old update the bios your download link is here! IMP. Be sure to plug in the battery and it should be charges above 10 % and the system should be connected to the mains power supply also ensure there will not be a power outage during the update process this will resolve the issue 100 % Dont forget to say thanks!
If it doesn't respond at all with no ram or hdd, it is likely that the board is in fact dead.....sorry. When you say you found a broken pin, I assume you mean one of the contacts from the power jack to the main board had a cracked solder joint and you resoldered it. If this is the case, try disconnecting and reconnecting the connector from the lcd panel to the mainboard. It may just not be making contact. Also, if you boot up with the hd installed, do you see the hd activity led flashing like at a normal boot? If not, sounds like a dead board. Try pulling the optical drive too if you haven't already. Try connecting to an external monitor too.
If you remove the battery and disconnect power cord, then hold power button for 20 seconds, then reconnect power cord but do not re-insert battery, and the unit powers on okay, the problem may be your battery. If there is still an intermittent problem, the power connector inside the unit may be loose and need re-soldering, or you could have a bad power supply.
had same problem, thought changing power jack would solve problem, but, it turns out the power supply is the problem,, works great with another dell ps
it could be that the ports where you plug in the charger is damaged. if you have an identical or a known good battery that is charged, try to install that and check if it works. you need a motherboard replacement if the system works with a charged battery.
Might be a driver glitch. Try uninstalling the drivers for the touch pad, some times refered to as synaptic pointing device, from the devic manager, then plug the power supply in and reboot. The machine will find the touch pad, and reinstall the drivers. Try this and let me know.
You may have a problem in the DC charge circuitry. These parts are located on the moatherboard directly and can't be bought separately and repaired. You must send your Dell to a specialised service to have it fixed by them. Sorry, I can't see no other way for this problem to be solved.
