SOURCE: Had a Whipple surgery 7 years ago, starting to have stomach aches, constant nausea, diarrhea, blotting, what should I be most concerned about

Carla: According to "Q. What are the long-term effects of the Whipple procedure?
A. Most patients will completely recover from their operation within two months. In some cases, it may take up to six months to recover from the surgery. Most patients will need to take a daily vitamin with iron. Some patients will have temporary trouble regulating their blood sugar levels. Your doctor will determine if you need long-term medication to control your blood sugars. Some patients (i.e., overweight patients and pre-existing diabetics) may require insulin after their surgery. "

However, as an RN, I would say the most common problems years later can be development of scars that cause abdominal pain. Many people have this cared for by a procedure known as lysis of adhesions.

My Dr did a microscope light to look in my stomach I have a medium hiatal hernia and ulcer I'm on stomach pills. I need to know if I can help to heal it with out surgery

FIXYA volunteers don't have medical degrees, and advice is from the internet or their personal opinions. So many people want to ask questions to complete strangers on the internet, who may be self-serving or mistaken, and have no obligation to follow up with you to see if your medical condition is improved. So fair warning to you and other FIXYA questioners:

You can justify getting a second opinion from another Docter, and your insurance plan should have a provision to pay for it, especially if surgery is even being considered.

Years ago, Doctors discovered that many ulcers were curable with antibiotics.

Also, rarely is surgery needed for Hiatal Hernias, according to the internet medical information sites, but they are not a substitute for a professional medical opinion.

Quoting from the link shown:

How is it treated? If you have no symptoms, you don't need treatment.
If you have mild symptoms, your doctor may suggest lifestyle changes and perhaps nonprescription medicines. Here are some things to try:
  • Change your eating habits.
    • It's best to eat several small meals instead of two or three large meals.
    • After you eat, wait 2 to 3 hours before you lie down. Late-night snacks aren't a good idea.
    • Chocolate, mint, and alcohol can make GERD worse. They relax the valve between the esophagus and the stomach.
    • Spicy foods, foods that have a lot of acid (like tomatoes and oranges), and coffee can make GERD symptoms worse in some people. If your symptoms are worse after you eat a certain food, you may want to stop eating that food to see if your symptoms get better.
  • Do not smoke or chew tobacco.
  • If you get heartburn at night, raise the head of your bed 6 in. (15 cm) to 8 in. (20 cm) by putting the frame on blocks or placing a foam wedge under the head of your mattress. (Adding extra pillows does not work.)
  • Do not wear tight clothing around your middle.
  • Lose weight if you need to. Losing just 5 to 10 pounds can help.
If you often have symptoms or have severe symptoms, you may have GERD. Lifestyle changes may help, and your doctor may prescribe medicine. In severe cases, surgery can be used to pull the hernia back into the belly.

Good day,I Candro Mabuza working as a riggerheavy lifting, after working for along time without rest i started feeling pains then i went to see a doctor and he said its a hernia, what causes hernia?

incorrect method of lifting heavy weights
a hernia is where the stomach lining is torn and the gut is allowed to come out through the tear
they can be in any part of the lining and be in various degrees of pain
The worst is a strangulated hernia where the bowel comes out through the tear and is cut off by the lining resulting in a serious situation requiring immediate surgery or *****
They are all repairable by a surgeon so don't delay in getting the operation

What causes a stomach hernia

A stomach hernia is a protrusion of some internal organs through a weakness, or abnormal opening, in either the lower abdominal wall, or in the diaphragm above the upper stomach.

Sufferers could have been born with such a weakness, or it can develop through strong coughing, violent vomiting, pregnancy, obesity, or constipation.

What is a tortuous esophagus

It means that the esophagus has curved or turned in a direction out of it's normal shape somewhere in between your mouth and your stomach. This can happen due to a number of things like too much stomach acid or hernias. I had it at one time due to a hiatal hernia.

What does a hernia symptom look like when the stomach tissue gives in

A hernia looks like a protrusion on the outside skin of the abdomen. It is caused by a muscle/tissue weakness or tear that has allowed a portion of the stomach to push through and then push against the skin. It looks like a bulge, usually smooth and 1/2 ball shape, on the skin.

I had surgery for my hernia in 2008. it was solid and hard like a rock. Today it blew up twice its size and is soft with a burning pain.

back to the surgeon quick smart
if the gut has come out through the hernia tear , the you run the very real risk of a strangulated hernia which will result in septicemia and a real risk to you life

How long would it take to recover after surgery for inguinal hernia? My dad has been scheduled to undergo repair surgery for inguinal hernia. While the doctors have given us their opinion on how long...

Surgical procedures to repair Hernia these days could be completed in less than an hour or two in cases of inguinal hernia. Just as with any surgical procedure, the body needs time to heal after a hernia surgery. In most cases, patients are allowed to leave the hospital on the same day as the procedure unless there are any unexpected complications. Recovery process is gradual. If your work does not involve much physical exertions, you could be back at work in 10 days or less. But make sure you do it in consultation with your doctor. Gentle exercises are advised as part of the recovery process. But you'd have to be patient until your body fully recovers from the surgery before you decide to start working out or unduly exerting yourself.
