Oil leak Hi I purchased a used 60 qt mixer. I have not used it yet and it has been sitting about 6 months. I noticed some oil in the bowl. If I clean it , it is back in a little while. Can this be because of inactivity or movement? Thanks

I have a Hobart 60 qt mixer that has oil coming out the top around the shaft cover. What would cause this?

Do you really mean a 60 qt. mixer? That is industrial size and would be about 4' tall. Maybe a 6 qt. mixer? In either case, oil coming out around the shaft cover indicates that someone either over-lubricated the mixer or used the wrong viscosity lubrication. Has it been serviced recently? You might need to take it back to wherever it was serviced.

I own the 6 QT Stand mixer. Is there a Is there a 4 or 5 qt bowl that works with this mixer?

Kitchenaid does not make a 4 or 5 quart bowl that would fit your 6 quart mixer, but other 3rd party companies do!
You may be in luck.
I haven't seen this bowl in person, but it apparently will fit your 6qt mixer. Here is a link to a page selling the mentioned attachment. It comes in a set, with appropriate wire-whip attachments:

Have a d330 Hobart mixer was wondering if I can upgrade to a 40 qt bowl and accessories for this mixer, and if is possible, and if will do the job.been tell that I can do this upgrade but not sure thank...

one would assume that if you get a 40 qt. bowl. you will most likely increase your batch size, correct, i would make do with what you have, that mixer was designed for a 30 qt. bowl, not a 40, hence the d 340 model, but the choice is yours. i would stay with what you have, monomoy

My K45SS 250 Watt mixer has been sitting for approximately 6 months while I was away. I find that there is grease in the bowl and around the beater connection. Do I need to take it apart and oil it and if...

MEILSTOGO - To answer your main question, if the amount of oil you found in your bowl was small and if your mixer otherwise works normally with the missing oil, no, you really don’t need to take your mixer apart to oil it. The internal gears are factory packed with enough grease to last a 'lifetime' (whatever that means). Depending on the age of your mixer, where it was stored (high temp possibly?); these conditions may have contributed to the oil that’s come out of suspension and seep beyond the gasket, down the agitator shaft into your mixing bowl.

What should you do? First clean your bowl and agitator shaft by sponge with detergent and hot water (DO NOT immerse your mixer in a sink of hot soapy water, though!)

If you are DITY type person, and feel adventurous, and your mixer is not under warranty you can troubleshoot it yourself. Be sure you have the Parts List manual on hand. If you're lacking one, you can download it from the KA website. Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number (in your case, try K45SSW select Parts List (1) and then check to see it this matches your mixer model). You can check on page 4 & 5 for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer, along with all the parts. It can be messy but gratifying. You might want to reorder the gasket for starters. Once apart you can check for any other unseemly wear and tear on the gears, etc.

If you really feel the need to re-grease your transmission, you should use a food-grade grease that you can order online (although I’ve seen automotive bearing grease used too – your call). Here are five potential vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com; and Grainger.com. You should be search for ‘food grade grease’. Prices can vary widely between vendors, so do your comparison shopping.

Finally, here's a link to a site that details the disassembly and replacement of a mixer's grease, which might be helpful, too. http://www.foodonthefood.com/food_on_the_food/2009/04/how-to-repair-a-kitchenaid-mixer-yourself.html
Good luck and have fun. I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA

Leaking Dark Oil

Sounds like a combination of two issues.

1. In all likelyhood, the viscosity of the lubricant in the main transmission of your mixer has broken down and is now oil rather than the grease it once was.

2. The seal on the main transmission shaft is worn and the "oil" is leaking past it, resulting in drops of oil forming on the bolt head at the bottom of your planetary and dripping into your bowl.

Draining and replacing the lube and seal is a rather involved repair. To do it properly, complete transmission disassembly is required.

If it was my pizza business and there's just a drop of oil here and there ( 1-3 drops in the bottom of bowl in the morning ) I'd let it ride, keep wiping the oil away prior to mixing a batch and budget (apprx $500-$600 ) for a proper repair as it becomes worse over time. Unfortunately, it won't get better.

I'll add.

It's been my experience that D300's and pizza dough don't play well together. Be certain to calculate the weight of all your ingredients and then consult the capacity chart found here. http://www.kroslakbakeryequipment.com/pdfz/HOBD300.pdf

Stay within the guidelines and you should be fine...however your batches will be rather small.

Hope this is of some use.

Kitchenaid pro stand mixer will not turn on I has been sitting for 3 months without being used. It is a 475 watt bowl lift 6 qt mixer. about 3 years old.

How comfortable are you with electrical parts? With the mixer UNPLUGGED and the switch ON measure resistance between the (flat) plug pins. If it's infinite (no meter movement) which is to be expected, there is an open circuit. The switch could be open or the wire to the switch could be disconnected (improbable) or the motor could be burned out and open (not very probable).

Maybe you could take the switch to a shop and have it tested.

This is not really a solution, just step 1.
