I have a Maytag #MDB8600AWW that is making a loud whining sound during the whole cycle. What is causing it and how can we fix it? Thanks

Top Loader? That sounds like a gearbox problem. It is not an easy fix. With that much use and those many years, it is probably time for a new one. A new High Efficiency Front Loader, will save you a fortune in water, electricity and detergent.

My Maytag Performa makes a grinding sound when it agitates. When it starts to dump the water it makes a loud grinding on metal sound... really loud. What is the problem and how much to fix?

it must be motor run away condition. motor must have exceeded its design speed and the internal windings must have parted off. you did the right thing. but, when your son switched on again, it would have run for few minutes with all internal extra friction and stopped with burnt smell. you have lost the motor. but, before replacing the motor get the speed control system checked.

It's most likely coming from the wash motor bearings. Based upon the age of the dishwasher it might be time for a new one. Although it can be fixed by replacing the motor. Its possible, something is in the water pump making that noise, if not then its either the gearcase, basket drive/clutch.

Yes, bearing, most definitely. It is a cheap part but difficult to replace.

Could be a loose belt, or drum bearings,or ( drum rollers if your model is so equiped) In my mind machine would be worth repair when needed.
