Had the same problem. When I turned on the console, the screen went a bit fuzzy at first and then remained blank. There was no sound either, but I could still turn it off with the controller. I checked all the connections and even plugged it into another T.V. I have now discovered the problem! The scart connector which came with the PS3 wasn't working properly. Didn't have the prob before because I wasn't using it. Hope that this helps. If not, try holding the power button down for a few seconds after turning on the system. You'll hear a beep noise and the system will try to adjust its AV output or something. Worth a try anyway.

Why does the screen have Black Border around the picture , picture distorted?

There are connectors and circuitry that control the vertical and horizontal picture image generation that need to be at the edges of the screen. The border simply covers these connectors and circuitry so the user cannot see it. Newer models of flat panel TV's solve this problem better to get more picture real-estate to the user. Flat panel TV's are not like the original CRT (cathode-ray) TV's of the past that had borders to conceal a non-linear distortion that occurred at the edges.

F25216bc RCA 25 inch TV. Color is distorted with a heavy red tint

You either have a bad CRT or a Shorted Red Output IC/Transistor. One other possibility is if
someone turned the Screen Control down if it is accessible from the back of the set.
Hope this helps,

Playstation 3 distorted picture when turned on

I had the same problem (see above) and was able to fix it. The solution my be an S-video plug. I went to Wal-Mart and picked up a universal component S-A/V cable ("universal" in that you can use it for PS2, PS3, XBOX 360, Elite & Wii consoles).

At first, I used only the audio and video plugs and the picture still appeared distorted. Then I plugged the S-cable in (to the TV) and the picture displayed crystal clear!

Keep in mind, I never had to use an S-cable with my PS3 before. It worked fine without it from day one. I also can't blame the firmware update because I did the firware update AFTER I noticed the distorted picture. Previous to that, I had done every other firmware update with no problems. I know it's not the TV because I tried on four different televions and the result was the same -- so I'm left scratching my head, but at least the picture is clear.

For those wondering, the cables I bought were Phillips S-AV cable. It comes in a white box and is 8 feet long. The price was about $20. Sony offeres component A/V cables for more than double the cost, but chances are, those cables would have been useless to me since they did not include an S-video plug.

PS3 and & DVD's

If there is no picture on the TV screen: Back to top
  • Check that the input mode of the TV is appropriate for the connector in use on the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system.
  • There may be a problem with the cable in use. Try using another cable that is compatible with the PLAYSTATION®3.
  • If the video output settings on the PLAYSTATION®3 do not match those of the cable or TV in use, there may be no picture. If the screen goes blank, turn off the system.
  • Then, with only the PLAYSTATION®3 and the TV connected, touch the system's power button for more than 5 seconds to turn the system back on. The video output settings will automatically be reset to the standard resolution.
If the DVD or Blu-ray Disc™ (BD) cannot be played, or the picture is distorted: Back to top
  • When outputting DVD content or PLAYSTATION®3 system format software in SD resolution, only discs recorded in the NTSC standard can be played.
  • If the PLAYSTATION®3 is connected to a VCR or a combination TV/VCR unit, copy protection encoding on some DVDs and BDs may cause image distortion, or may cause the image to become lighter or darker. In such cases, connect the system to the TV directly.
  • If the DVD or BD does not match the region code set in the PLAYSTATION®3, it cannot be played.
  • Some DVDs are preset with parental control restrictions. Enter the password that was set in "Security Settings" to temporarily increase the viewer age restriction level.
  • Some BDs are preset with parental control restrictions. Enter the password that was set in "Security Settings" to change the parental control level.
  • The BD may be disc-locked. Enter the password that was set when the disc was created.
