My new console keeps shutting off after a few minutes of play. ie: i was playing halo 2 on it and i got as a far as the master cheif being armed, and a little bit of fighting (if that helps with the time line) then it shut off and two of the sections on the ring turned red. it can't be red ring of death because when i turned it back on it played the game again and it didn't fail until about the same area of game play. could this be a over heating or cooling issue?
Its a problem with the heatsink. Basically the system is getting overheated due to a defect in the systems design.
Solution- You can end the console to Microsoft, but they will charge you unless it is in warranty.
I had the same problem and sent it back to microsoft but they charged me $100 and i got it back fixed.
Your cooling unit may be damaged/malfunctioning or has blockage. (needs the dust blown out- its overheating)
There is a requirement for backwards compatibility and that is you have to have a hard drive for your Xbox 360. If you bought a Core system you can't play original Xbox games on your system until you buy a hard drive
