You can install both wista and xp in the same computer, better for this to create new partition (resize ild one and free some space and create partition in its place) then install XP created partition (partition create is possible professional tools paragon partition manager, norton partition magic or other).
afrer restart only XP works, then insert VISTA install cd and "fix boot"
Here is brief discussion about this VISTA>XP or XP>VISTA.
Take care of drivers may some of them dont be created for XP if your pc is super new.

Cannot see HD in toshiba satalitte l40170 in booting

In some markets the L40-170 is sold without an Operating System.

I assume this is in booting off a Windows XP CD, as Vista, Win7 and Linux (Ubuntu) will recognise the HD on boot.

The L40-170 has a SATA-Hard drive with no compatible mode. WinXP will not natively recognize it.

You need to download the SATA driver from Toshiba-Europe and either:

a)Place it on a USB floppy disk and install it when the Windows installer prompts for external drivers. (This is unlikely to work unless you have a Toshiba branded device)

b) Integrate the sata drivers into a windows installation using software like nLite. (You might as well integrate all the L40-170 drivers and the XP service packs at the same time.)

Caution: Don't use software to extract the drivers off a working machine, the drivers required for windows installer are different from those required by the OS. Rather download them from Toshiba.

Toshiba laptop reboots when on AC Power

I have the same problem with my Toshiba too, prima facie, it looks like Toshiba and Vista don't make a good combo. I suspected this to be a pure hardware problem, but was disproven when I booted in safe mode. It does not have any problems with the AC Power on in Safe mode.

Installation of windows xp on a preloaded windows vista laptop

See this , you have to download the SATA driver , as you have a SATA hard disk , then slipstream it into the xp installation package.

Alternatively , put the driver on a floppy and press F2 when prompted during the setup when its loading all the files (It says Press F2 if you want t o install a SATA Driver"

Then it will detect your drive and install as normal :D

Toshiba L40-A510

There are a lot of things that do not work on Vista that do work on XP. For that reason some of my client's have asked me to re-install XP so they would not have to upgrade their hardware and software programs. You could have the same problem.
