But in some other canon printers,Error code 5100 indicates that the waste ink absorber has reached maximum capacity. The Canon i860 printer uses the waste ink absorber to keep ink residue off the printer heads and internal printer components. To resolve this error code, the waste ink absorber must be cleaned out and the error code message needs to be reset.

Open the top of the printer.

Locate the waste ink absorber pad on the right side of the inside of the printer. Grasp the pad and pull up to remove.

Take the waste ink absorber pad to a sink. Run warm water over the pad and wring it out to clean it. Wring the excess water out when done cleaning.

Clean the waste ink absorber compartment with a tissue or cloth.

Set the waste ink absorber pad on a dry paper towel or clean cloth to dry.

When the pad is dry, place it back into it's compartment in the printer.

Close the top of the printer.

Press and hold the "Resume" button on the printer. Press and hold the "Power" button while holding down "Resume."

Release the "Resume" button. Press "Resume" twice. The indicator light will turn amber followed by green.

Release the "Power" button.

Press the "Resume" button four times

Press the "Power" button. The error code is now reset.
