GE spacemaker Profile XL1800 vent fan will not shut off

I have an above About 1 minute after cooking the vent fan will go on and stay on even after cooking or if you open the door. The vent will startup even when I boil water on the stove. The vent shuts off about 15-20 minutes later unless we unplug it. If I slam the door shut hard sometimes the vent will stop. Other than the vent fan coming and staying on the microwave works fine.

Thanks!

I also have same model GE microwave XL1800. My experience is similar to yours. Got my microwave with new home purchase 1 1/2 year ago and now is acting up. One day, my wife was cleaning around the area when a sudden pop scare her. The microwave was not even in use. I quickly unplug the unit and recycle power. After that, the LCD display was going nuts, turning the fan it will not shut off unless I pull the plug. The unit will not heat at all. If what you're saying about sticky relay is correct, there is a lot of oil residue inside the flapper. The unit vents to the outside (upgrade).

Any suggestions? Thanks for any ideas.

It may be a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount, or a problem on the control panel, such as a sticky relay.

I would suspect a sticky relay first, but the door switches should be checked.

If you or a friend decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, linked here on Fixya: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

If you need your control panel assembly (smart board) repaired, we do that for $39.95 nationwide.

GE Spacemaker XL1800 vent fan doesn't pull air from beneath

On the exhaust system (top of unit) there is a small metal 'damper' that is most likely stuck shut. If that is all clear then you have a problem in the duct work of the home.

I'm betting your base model number is JVM1860, JVM1861, JVM1870, JVM1871, JVM3660, or JVM3670.
That's the automatic louver you're having trouble with. There are micro switches in the louver assembly which tell the controller when the louver is open or closed.
If one of those switches or the louver motor fails, the louver will not work correctly.
Did your cooktop lights recently fail?
Sometimes the surge from them shorting will cause damage to the circuit board, which can be repaired.
There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.
There is a video here showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

GE Spacemake XL1800 whines every time it cooks works great the

The charcoal filter must be changed every 6-12 months, depending on how much and how the oven is used.

If a filter clogs, it will interfere with cooling and lead to magnetron damage.

It may also be putting a strain on the cooling fan or hood vent exhaust fan, or one of those fans may have a blade loose on the motor shaft.

Outside venting GE Profile Spacemaker XL1800

Your vent flap could be taped or it could be faulty installation not allowing the vent to open. If you take the front vent cover off, you should be able to reach in above the fan unit and gently push the vent flap up, it should move freely with no binding. If it doesn't it is taped or blocked. If it is taped, gently putting upward pressure on the flap might release the tape. If that doesn't work the vent installation is blocking the flap. You might have to remove the unit from the wall (two people to do this) or disassemble the vent duct above the microwave and rework the interface for clearance.

hope this helps,

It sounds like two separate problems.

1. It sounds like your magnetron is overheating and then the thermostat trips, cutting the power until it turns off, then it closes to power it back up.

It's essential that the internal cooling fan (I don't mean the hood / vent / exhaust fan) is running to be sure the magnetron stays cool.

2. It also sounds like your vent / hood / exhaust thermostat is sticking or the triac on the circuit board is leaky, causing the vent fan to stay on.

But you may want to check the owner's manual. It is designed to stay on if the temperature of the stove top is above a certain level.
