DVD players designed for the US are set for Region 1 and cannot be used with DVD's that are from other regions such as Great Britain and most of Europe which use Region 2 DVD's . What you need is a "Region Free" player which plays all regions or a player that plays your specific region. We live in the US but watch many British DVD series so use.a Region Free player as they are Region 2 and we are in Region 1.

maybe you can return the player or at least get some sort of credit for it towards the correct region player. If you are unsure of your region, just Google it.

probably you are trying to play a disc that is not zone free or you need a code for your player to make it zone free. you may be playing a zone 2 disc ( PAL) on a machine that only takes zone 1 (NTSC) or vica-versa.

Side note: firmware is "miniature" software which runs an electronic device. Some electronic devices have updatable firmware that can be downloaded from the manufacturer's web site and re-programmed into the device. DVD's are coded to play in different parts of the world. Each DVD player is set up to recognise these codes. Most are set up to recognise only the region code of the area it was made for. For example Region 1 is for the USA and Region 2 is UK and parts of Europe. A DVD player made for the USA market would not be able to play any other discs with a Region code other than 1. And so on... This was done for the film industry benefit so that films can be released at later dates in different parts of the world without everybody seeing it on DVD issued in the USA.
However most DVD players can be "hacked" by a combination of keys allowing the user of say a Region 2 player to change it to another region. Some can also be changed to Region 0 which means it should play any disc.
How to change the Region code can be found by putting the model number of the DVD into a search engine and the words 'region code'. Some can be found on this site too.

there is a guy on Ebay that sells the regions unlock codes for ALL DVD, and remotes. It only cost me something like $3 and it was a PDF file I downloaded. So far, it has worked for 2 of my DVD players

Report your Video shop to RiSA. They should legally only carry zone 2 DVD's as a rental copy and a sale copy has two different licenses of use. If they have zone 1 DVD's it means they are bypassing the local supply chain (ie getting it outside South Africa) and damaging the industry as a whole.
