Same problem. Same error message. Can a sensor be obtained and changed? How big a job is it?

You have to remove the white protective sheet from the the lid. Once you remove it you will be able to scan film. Also make sure the lock button is not in the lock position.

Open the Canoscan Toolbox.
Click the Save option.
Put a check in the box that states "Display the Scanner Driver".
Click Scan.
Click the Advanced Mode tab.
Make sure Select Source is set to "Platen".
Click the Preview button at the top left

Check that the lamp is not burning out, or replace with new lamp. Check the glass area to make sure there isn't a thin plastic sheet on the glass. This should be removed. Let lamp warm up for about 5 minutes before using.
If your problem still persists, it's not your computer, but likely the scanner software inside the scanner itself.

First, make certain that the flatbed scanner lid is securely shut.
Second, unplug the power and USB cables from the rear of the scanner.
Third, deposit the Canon 8400F scanner in the nearest garbage receptacle where it belongs.
Hope this helps.

This is caused by a faulty FAU cable. One, or more, of the eight wires within this cable has fractured and unless you are handy with fine wires and a soldering iron, it's off to the scanner shop, I'm afraid.

The problem went away for me, when I reset the error message on my MP830. In this case, the message was that I was out of ink. Not a problem for scanning, yet this gave me the "lamp" message. Reset the message by pressing the "OK" button.

Error message 2-178-0. What does this mean.Changed drivers but no change in message?

Try this:

Open the CanoScan Toolbox.
Click the Save option.
Put a check in the box that states "Display the Scanner Driver".
Click Scan.
Click the Advanced Mode tab.
Make sure Select Source is set to "Platen".
Click the Preview button at the top left.
If the error still occurs, then most likely it will be a service issue.

One thing to check...see if the inside lamp illuminates when you turn the scanner on using the power button at the back left side of the scanner.
