This comes from the residual water that sits in the bottom of the wash tub and drain lines, or you may have something lodged in the rubber bellow (rubber door gasket) or drain pump. The residual water is normal and required to keep sewer gases from seeping into the wash drum through the drain lines. The water acts as a vapor seal. What can cause this water to sour is closing the washer door when not in use. Because of the tight seal on these washer doors, it is highly recommended that you leave the door open to allow the tub to air while not in use. The following link explains some other things you may consider:

I know this becomes a sore subject with some people, because some of this information was not mentioned by the manufacturer in earlier models of the Whirlpool Duet or Kenmore Elite. Much of this information was learned thorugh trial and error by technicians in the field and customer complaints/concerns. It was later supposed to be added to the documentation in the newer models to ensure the consumers knew the proper care procedures. I personally own one of these washers and have never had a problem with odor or mildew in the 9 years I've had it, following this regiment.

If you suspect you may have to clean out the drain pump, the following link explains how:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385845-checking_drain_pump_in_whirlpool_duet

Start by checking the rubber bellow around the door, check the drain pump for debris, leave the door open when not in use and run a clean cyle once in a while if you do not routinely use hot water cycles. This kills unwanted bacteria and will keep mold, mildew and odor from forming. If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope you find this information helpful.

NOTE: If the rubber bellow becomes permiated with mold, it often will not come out (even with scrubbing). If this is the case with your washer, you may have to replace the bellow.

They sell this powder cleaning solution that you can use to clean your washer and it does eliminate the odor. I bought mine at Target it's from Tide they sell a small box with about 3 small packages. You can read the instructions on the box it's very easy to use.

The washer for our Maytag LS7806 has quit, but the dryer still works. A few weeks after we stopped using the washer, it started to smell of rotten eggs. I can't find a filter to clean, any ideas?

The bacteria in the washer part are causing the smell.
Give the inside a good wipe round with a damp cloth to remove any visible residue.
Leave the door and soap drawer fully open so that the inside dries out after a couple of days; that should fix it.

Top load washer smells like rotten eggs when water is draining into tub

As someone who has had a deep well drilled and found water, but water contaminated with iron and sulfur, I can tell you first hand about the rotten egg smell. The water softener will remove the iron that can turn clothes orange, but doesn't do anything to remove the rotten egg odor. You will need a charcoal (carbon) water filter to eliminate the sulfur smell.

The washing machine smells like rotten eggs on the rinse cycle. The clothes also smell afterwards as well. What can I do to resolve this?

Rotten egg stench is caused by sulphur content in the water or building up over time in your water heater. It can also build in a water system that is rarely run. Have you noticed this smell from other taps in your house? There are inline charcoal filters that can remove it from the water, or you can also try removing the water lines from the washer and running them awhile.

Is this new, or has it been happening for awhile?

Jacuzzi jets smell like rotten eggs when turned on.

Any time you get a strong smell of rotten eggs it is due to a high concentration of sulfer in the water. Are you on well water? I would suggest using a cleaner like http://www.sani-bath.com/ to clean out your system.

Laundry room smells like rotten eggs

Does the sewer drain line have a trap at the bottom that prevents sewer gas from entering the room? If the smell seems to be coming from the washer itself, run a wash cycle empty with a cup of baking soda, detergent and hot water to clean the interior.

Rotten Egg Smell

Repair man told me this is common with front load washers. I was told to put Sunlight dish washing detergent (for dishwashers not hands) in the machine (about 1/2 cup) and do a hot wash with the machine empty.
