I have a Hunter ceiling fan (model no. 25736, approximately) that operates by remote only. For the last two weeks have been unable to start the fan or turn on the lights. I have opened the remote and cleaned contacts, and replaced the battery. I see a red light when I press the buttons, but no fan or lights are not started. Hunter says that it is likely the receiver, and that they are the only source. About four months ago, the remote got wet and stopped working. I opened it, dried it and cleaned the contacts, and it worked normally until recently.
1. What do you suggest doing to diagnose the problem?
2. Any suggestions on where I can pick up parts in the Chicago area, since I would rather not order from Hunter?
Thanks-
Richard
Home Depot sells universal remote systems (transmitter and receiver) for around $30 (in Delaware & Pennsylvania) -- don't know price in Chicago).
I'd just replace it. Hunter may be correct that they are the only source for the receiver, but if you get a new transmitter as well, you don't need their receiver. The labor is the same either way.

Hunter has replacement receivers for $50.00+Shipping+Tax which is a good chunk of the entire cost of the fan. I have "bit the bullet" twice now to replace two of the four Hunter remote cont. fans I have. I am none the happy about that! But, when the fans work, they work fine; When they don't work...ugh! But, I did make a mistake...I did not thoroughly check the electrical contacts within the canopy. I only thoroughly concluded that the problem was not the "controller"! So, thoroughly check connections and the wiring in the canopy...it may save you a 50-spot!!! But, it the fan is still under warranty, the replacement is free!!! I also got a 3rd receiver replacement on warranty, also! How nice...it seems they are designed to fail!!! Two fans failed just after the warranty period!!! Due to the "tight fit" in the canopy, be careful about substitute controllers. Also consider safety in regards to electrical issues if you do substitute.
A few years ago - back when these remote controls were still stocked by Hunter - I had to replace the receiver on one of my 25736 fans. The person at Hunter was very knowledgeable about these fans. She told me the probable reason why the receiver failed was because someone had used the chain on the light assembly to turn the lights on an off. She said using the chain switch was a known cause of blowing the receiver. So, if your light fixture has a pull chain on these fans DON"T use it. Use only the remote control to control the lights.
