The frdge side stopped cooling. the freezer side is fine - help!

We have a GE eterna series side by side. Two days ago I opened the fridge and it was not cool. The freezer side is functioning normally. We cleaned the coils and cleaned out the fridge. It is still not cool. There is a tiny bit of frost on the back wall of the freezer.

Hi, With the information you supplied i'm going to assume there is an ice build up at the rear of the freezer. Your problem is going to be with your defrost system. I will also assume you have the ability to repair this yourself. This is going to be one of three problems with your refridgerator, 1st thing to do is remove shelfs and panel in the back of the freezer...you should see ice build up on the evaporator...don't worry get a hair dryer and melt the ice. Next locate the wires for the heater...using a multi meter test the heater for condinuity...if the heater is bad replace it, If the heater is good replace the defrost thermostat..the stat normally is a barrel looking part clipped onto the evaporator pipe. The last possible problem could be the evaporator fan, have you heard the fan running in the past few hours?..if you are not sure pull the panel out to where you can see fan and watch it over an hour to see if it turns. I have included links with pictures of what the parts you need to check are: http://romulusappliance.com/manufacturers/maytag/refrigerators/575432.JPG defrost stat http://www.hotekalliance.com/UploadFiles/2008627111553382.jpg heaters http://www.applianceblog.com/archives/EvapMotor1018185.jpg evap fan. Hope this helps. If you have any other questions please feel free to comment again. If you decide to get a repair guy in should not cost you any more then $120 - $200 depending on make/model/problem Good luck & thanks for using fixya! Mike p.s. please don't forget to rate this free solution.

Vote you down? I just went to check if the evaporator was froze and when I pulled on the cover the fan started, it seems to be working ok now so I put the screws back in it and it stopped again. I grabbed the cover and bent it and the fan started again.

My refrigerator stopped cooling and my freezer stopped freezing but the freezer is still cooling

Same thing with our GE Eterna Series - off and on for the last two weeks. Took back panel off, looked around, vacuumed dust build up off of the fan blades, etc.; everything worked fine for five good days. Then frig went out stopped cooling. Off and on for the last week. Unplugging it works for a day then back to not freezing and or colling.

Ge eterna series fridge side not working

Could you look inside the freezer compartment and after unplugged remove the panel to see if ice is blocking the vent to fresh food compartment. If there is ice it could be something is not working with the defrost cycle. Your refrigerator has a control board that handles these processes but other factors can cause ice buildup in vent. Thanks, Sea Breeze

GE side by side not cooling properly/outside surface hot

please check the condenser fan motor. it is probably not running or the condenser is very dirty.

remove the rear cover and it will show you the compressor and the condenser fan.
if the fan is not running, try to rotate it manually and feel if it is sticking .

if it is, it may just need the old wd 40 lubricant.

tnx 4 using fixya,

drcool
