>>Is this dripping normal?<<

No - it sounds like the fill valve, which is operated electrically, is leaking and probably needs to be replaced. If there is a separate water shut off valve for the humidifier, turn it off and see if the dripping stops. You are correct in that the humidifier should not operate in the summer. You will need to turn off the water to the humidifier to replace the valve. Also look for any other leaks in the tubing connected to the valve.

While you're there, check the unit for scaling and also check the pad or wheel - it probably needs to be replaced too.

My Aprilaire 600 is dripping from the front toward the bottom... Can I fix it myself or do I need my maintenance guy?

Hello, check to make sure that the drain line is not blocked, this could cause the water to back up in the humidifier and leak, also make sure the water panel is clean and free of any mineral deposits.

Aprilaire 600 was leaking water from bottom of unit...subsequently filter pad replaced and all parts cleaned of residue; drain tube cleaned and is draining...The problem is that water is still dripping...

Sorry to read about your problem, I hope this helps you out.

you must have a defective water inlet valve, and its letting water in, just a little.. it maybe dirt in the valve, clogging it.

Aprilaire 600 humidier: water continuously runs

sounds like you may have it wired to a continuous power source vs one that shuts off with the furnace. The most common wiring is red to C & white to W

Testing a Aprilaire Humidifier 600 Controller

if it works in the test mode then it should be okay but you can get a humidity gauge from radio shack and set in the house to see how high or low its is. the humidifier is only going to give a max of 45% humidity

Humidity too low

I corrected the problem...RH is rising nicely!! Installed by "professionals" on my Trane XV90....I redid their wiring and now have the following setup...

600A water supply coming from hot water line.
Removed orifice inside incoming feed tube.
control incoming water flow from saddlevalve on hot water supply ( make sure its a nice solid flow, no drips, but no "force" too it either)..enough to insure entire evaporator unit is wet and water is slightly flowing out of bottom to drain.

I also have it wired to run when ever the furnace blower is on. Heat or no heat. XV90 is variable speed, and by doing this the 600a is always adding moisture, until it reaches correct RH%

Also, I disconnected the outdoor temp sensor. I went to Radio Shack and bought a 47K ohm resistor ( 1/2 watt....4 pack for 99 cents). Installed that in place of outdoor sensor...now runs in manual mode. Have unit currently set to number 5.

Aprilaire 600: water only runs in "Emergency" Heat mode

When your unit is on normal the outside unit works and the inside only the fan runs. your heat pump does not remove any humidity when it operates so the installation cotractor did not wire it to operate then. you can change the wiring on the humidifier to operate all the time by wiring it to the fan (g) terminal then it should work just turn it all the way to the lowest humidity when you are in cooling mode.

Aprilaire 600 Humidifier

J-

I had this problem several years ago. In order for the water to flow, the outside temperature sending unit must indicate to the controller that it is less than 60F. If not, the unit will not operate outside of test mode. Check the temp outside where your sending unit is (could the sun be heating that side of the house?) and ensure that the circuit to the sending unit is working. I had a bad wire splice inside a wire nut stopping the circuit. Took me a long while to figure it out.

If the outside temp and your sending unit circuit is ok, I wish you luck on your troubleshooting.

Aprilaire 600 just installed and showing an error code

No, it is not an accurate statement.

These units have simple configurations They have a water supply similar to a ice making referigerator, an enclosure connected to your supply duct that houses a prop fan and media, a seperate humidistat and a drain for excess water. Your unit may also include fancy controls including an outside thermometer & humidistat to avoid over humidification that can cause problems during freezing weather. The humidistat looks a lot like a thermostat and is located in your living space or in the return duct. The prop fan in the box pulls air from the duct, through evaporation media and back to the duct. An electric solenoid valve releases water that pours over the media.

If the humidiy is below the humidistat seting and the AC/heater is running, the Aprilaire fan starts and the solenoid valve opens. I suspect the facier controls include the flashing warning light.

The warning light spells problem. Aprilaire's customer service should be able to provide guidance for the homeowner in the form of simple checks. I suspect your contractor is avoiding a warentee call and the trip it requires.

A word of caution. These humidifiers can be powered directly from your air conditioning unit control board from an auxiliary connection. If the control board isn't rated to carry the current required by the Aprilaire fan, valve and controls or the Aprilaire encounters and electrical problem, the board can be damaged. This can be avoided by using a relay. The AC board switches a low energy relay. 120 volt house power is connected to load side of the relay and runs the Aprilaire.

My board cooked at a location near this connection, but I can't be sure that the load from the humidifier caused it since four of our neighbors also lost their board. It failed the evening of a snow storm and required a costly emergency after hours service call. The next day a new board required a three hour drive. Fortunately a fan powered propane heater kept our pipes from freezing.
