Black smoke is caused by excess fuel that has entered the cylinder area and cannot be burned completely. Poor fuel mileage is also a common complaint when black smoke comes out of the tailpipe. Black smoke out the tailpipe is the least cause for alarm. Excess fuel will usually effect engine performance, reduce fuel economy, and produce a fuel odor. Some of the causes of excess fuel are a carburetor that is out of adjustment, a faulty fuel pump, a leaky fuel injector, or a faulty engine computer or computer sensor. If black smoke is present, check the engine oil to make sure excess fuel has not contaminated it. Do not start the engine if a heavy, raw fuel smell can be detected in the engine oil.

Black smoke when i put my foot down

On a newer vehicle with fuel injection, black exhaust smoke can be caused by one or more leaky fuel injectors, too much fuel pressure (sticking fuel pressure regulator), a faulty MAF sensor or Oxygen sensor, or a engine computer fault. with diesel engines, black smoke in the exhaust can occur during hard acceleration.

The first things you should check are your air-filter and other intake components like sensors, fuel injectors and the fuel-pressure regulator. Other reasons could be a clogged fuel return line.

Would a faulty egr valve on my 02 PT Cruiser 2.2crd cause excessive black smoke and injector knock under full throttle....thanks

black smoke is over fueling and although the turbo appears to spin ok the vale variation actuator may not be operating correctly
there are vanes in the exhaust turbine housing that are altered to increase the exhaust gas flow onto the turbine blades for quicker acceleration and these vanes are operated by a vacuum actuator and rod by a sensor
the vanes are subject to extreme heat and can rust stuck open or the hose gets hard and cracks
s not allowing the vanes to work
I would be concentrating in this area before the EGR valve
run the fault codes as well to get a better idea of the possible fault as some systems only put the light on for extreme conditions in engine and transmission

Black smoke from exhaust hard shifting

Black smoke from you're exhaust may mean that you're truck is burning oil. The hard shifting maybe do to something else. I recommend checking you tranny fluids! The color of the fluid should be pink. If you're fluid's look ok and it's still shifting you can reset the ECU to do this unplug the battery completely then touch the negative of the battery to the positive terminal this will drain any & all power from the ECU resetting it. Start up the engine let it idle for a minute or two then drive as smooth as you can for next few mile the computer will relearn the proper shifting spot's and you OBD1 will also relearn the beast running setting's. But if the black smoke if coming from somewhere else then I recommend going to a shop to get it checked!

Hard to start then black smoke out exhaust rough idle

Check the fuel pressure regulator. It may be bad. Pull off the vacuum hose to it and check for any sign of gas in the hose. A busted diaphragm in the regulator could let extra gas into the intake through the vacuum hose. The black smoke indicates it is getting too much gas-running rich.

Car was running fine next lost power hard to keep running black smoke comes from exhaust acts like running on 3 cylinders

Black smoke is from oil burning through the exhaust. It sounds like the rings are shot since a lost of power is your problem. If power was not an issue it would be a bad valve seal

Hard starting and to much smoke when engine running idle and sometimes fluctuation

Smoke usually there's a problem.... Bluish gray smoke means you're burning oil (could be a number of things like piston rings, valve seals)... White smoke means could mean you're burning transmission fluid, or there's a crack in the gasket or engine block.... Black smoke could mean you need your air filter changed, bad fuel injectors, bad distributor cap, ignition coil... I would guess it's probably black smoke coming out of your exhaust from the sounds of your symptoms...
