Coolant Loss My 2002 Saturn L300 has been losing coolant over the past six weeks. I had to fill the resevoir twice during that time period. The coolant level was 1/2" below the cold line and there was no coolant on the garage floor. Now the coolant level in the resevoir is halfway between the cold line and the bottom of the resevoir and there is coolant on the garage floor.

    thank you

The car has been in the garage for the last hour and I am waiting for it to cool down to check hoses etc. But I do not see one leak other than water from A/C. The coolant in the resevoir is about 1 inch below the cold line. Is it possible that I added too much coolant the last two times when the car was still hot and it boiled over?

  • Anonymous Aug 17, 2009

Yes, we saw coolant on the garage floor this morning. I am letting the car cool down and I see no leaks after two hours, but I am seeing the coolant level in the resevoir go down lower.

  • Anonymous Aug 17, 2009

No doubt, I will need to get under the car to check this.

Had a pressure test done and they did not see any leaks. Today I noticed coolant leaking from passenger side engine about 1 foot back from the radiator.

Check for leakage just above the exhaust manifold on the drivers side of the engine
I was told by my saturn dealer that the leakage is at the oil cooler
coolant leaks onto manifold and is boiled away so it will not show on the floor of the garage.

This is an update to my previous answer, I had a coolant leak problem and as I said my Saturn dealer

indicated an oil cooler leak was the probable cause.

I decided to wait it out and let the amount of leakage increase before taking it in.

their was another possibility of leakage at the thermostat housing, however this was not the location of the leak.

The mechanic had to remove the intake plenum and other hardware to access the top of the oil cooler.

This was the source of the leak. The oil and coolant systems were drained.

The oil coolant cover and the related tubings were removed and all new seals gaskets tubing and

oril coolant cover were reinstalled, coolant system was flushed and new Dex Cool installed oil and oilfilter were replaced.

The total for all this came to almost $ 760.00.

So much for leaking head gaskets.

    Marvin Aug 17, 2009

U WILL NEED TO HAVE A SHOP PRESSURE TEST THE COOLING SYSTEM TO SEE IF ANY LEAKS SHOW UP, U COULD HAVE JUST OVERFILLED THE BOTTLE BUT U SHOULD HAVE SEEN COOLANT STAINS THERE AS WELL, SO TAKE A CLOSE LOOK AT THAT.. I HAVE TO GO OUT NOW FOR REGULAR PAYING WORK SO YOU WON'T HERE FROM ME AGAIN UNTIL NEXT SATURDAY, GOOD LUCK.

Code p0128 thermostat

If the coolant is actually warming up properly, it could be the coolant temperature sensor. Or, you may have a bubble in the cooling system. Or, you could have a bad intake air temp sensor.

Coolant disappearing

If you are adding coolant every week, and you don't see any external leaks, the coolant is probably being burned thru the engine.
You can burn a couple of quarts a week and not see any smoke.
At some point in time you could pull the spark plugs and find evidence from the burning coolant.
Most common cause is a leaking head gasket or intake gasket.

The best way to find out where the coolant is leaking from. When a head gasket blows, usually there is water in the oil. Turning it kind of white. Or pressurizes the cooling system. But if you have had the head gasket replaced once already, then it probably is not the head gasket. When the steam is coming out from under the hood, raise the hood to see where it is coming from. That will tell you were your leak is.

Engine coolant light turns on but no aparant reasons why engine coolant level ok rad was flushed 2 months ago coolant temp gauge doesnt go past half way hot and cold air availabe in the cab

the coolant level sensor is malfunctioning. this should be either on the resevoir or screwed into the side of the radiator. inspect to see if there is one in the resevoir. if so, disconnect it and turn the vehicle on to see if the light goes out. if so replace it. if it is in the radiator, replace it. ther eare no "fixes" for these items.

This may be the first sign that your water pump is failing. First sign is a leak. Crawl on your back under car if you can see if you can see it coming from front of engine near a pully that would turn your water pump. There is a "weep hole" it may be driping from.

Coolant resevoir question

First, going two months without checking fluids leaves you open to not know when it started to get low. If you are filling the tank with gas, then you should check all the other fluids as well. By the book, you have two marks on the overflow container, COLD & HOT, normally we add coolant to the COLD level becuase of expansion when HOT it could overflow and waste coolant. So the new shop did not do anything bad, and the old shop should have advised you to check fuild levels often. In either case over two months evaporation could have reduced the coolant in the resevoir. It would be a good idea for the next few weeks to check it prior to starting the vehicle each day and not the level when cold, then check it when it has had time to warm up, such as when fueling the vehicle. Constanly having to add coolant is a serious condition that MUST be corrected soon or could lead to more serious engine failure. Hope this helps you.

Losing coolant in Saturn 1998 SC2, water pump recently replaced, mechanics can't find the leak. Any suggestions?

if it is leaking from the lower hose on the radiator then chances are it is dripping onto the ground and they wont notice it. Tighten the clamp and see if that helps.

Oil in water but no water in oil

I would have the fluid tested to be sure it contains oil before going any further.
