I heard a loud pop and the display went out completely. i can still here sound but the picture just isnt there

It sounds like your monitor just went bad. The reason you can still hear sound is because there is nothing wrong with your sound card. You can try connecting the monitor to another computer to see if it works. If it does not, then the monitor has died.

A popping sound as you describe sounds as if your tv blew a couple capicators on the main control board. More than likely , you are needing to aquire a new main circuit board.

I have a Vizio P50 HDM and while watching it last evening I heard a loud pop and the picture went into a very noisy/distorted condition. Sound is OK. Any ideas?

That loud pop is your Y and Z sustainer. Normally it goes out completly but yours is still half working. Not usally fixable yourself, because you may need to flash the control board f/w , which is proprietary and can't be aquired unless you work for them,

Does anything come on the screen? Input display box? 
If no:
Sounds like it could be a blow capacitor. Cheap part, but need someone with a little electronic know how repair to fix it.
