I have the same problem (all colors, but no black) with my Officejet Pro L7780, so you are not alone. It is not the ink cartridge! Have you found any solutions?

Hello and welcome to FixYa!
In the HP OfficeJet Pro L7780 the printheads are actually separate from the ink cartridges. In your case, it sounds like the black/yellow head has worn out and will need to be replaced. The good news is, this is a user replaceable part. The bad news is, the replacement heads are not cheap. Amazon has the HP 88 Black/Yellow printhead listed currently for about $61.

YouTube has a nice video that explains how to install the printheads here:

I hope this helps!
I have to ask this question of you, just to make sure this is not an issue. Are you using a factory new ink or toner cartridge? Please consider the following: If you are using a refilled or third party cartridges that may well be your problem. Most manufacturers build logic into their products to prevent the use of “Other Equipment Manufactured” cartridges as well as re-filled cartridges. They do this to prevent problems from contaminated inks or toner causing problems with print quality or damaging the physical printhead or photo conductors. If you are using factory new ink or toner cartridges, then please call the manufacturer’s Technical Support for assistance with the warranty on the cartridges Don
Some of the inkjets are clogged -- no ink is reaching the paper.
Run the HP Toolkit software (it can be installed from the CD-ROM
that came with the printer) and select "head-cleaning-cycle",
to try to unclog it.
Ok what you need to do is powerdown the printer the pull all ink out of the printer power it on without in then power it down again and replace the cartridges. If this doesnt work go into the control panels and select the color of the ink as only B&W and print a test page
You should take it back and exchange it or read on below.
Most modern cartridges have an ink level chip built on to them.
Should the level drop below 25% then most of these chips lock up and will not reset.
Re-filling them will have no effect
If you are lucky you should be able to find either a resetter around on the internet
OR
Even better empty cartridges that never need to be reset.
The second option is my preference
I realise these are not for your specific printer but there are others listed on both those sites as well
Right Click on the Printer you normally print too. Click on properties Click on Printing Preferences Click on the Color tab Click on Print in Gray Scale Click on Black Print Cart Only Click apply
