Question about Kicker Car Audio & Video

I recently installed a kicker 250.1 mono and a 12" Infiniti subwoofer that's rated at 250 rms watts at 2ohm. I did a big 3 a couple of months before the install to my 07 Silverado because I heard it was a good idea even though I'm not running some big watt system. My problem is that when I start my truck the amp and sub run fine. I can run the system for several songs without any problems. The issue is that when I put my vehicle in drive the amp goes in to protection mode. I've changed the location of the ground and I'm still having the same issue. What am I doing wrong?

If depends on what the amp is rated to run. If it is only rated to run 2 ohms x2ch then it can only run 4 ohms x1ch. If you run it at 1 or 2 ohms that is too low, too much current, and it will get hot and eventually blow up under hard use. Some quality amps can live that way, and it depends on the sub and what frequency you are running it at. For normal use I would not recommend it. Wire to sub at 4 ohms x1 (or 2 ohms x2ch) for that amp if that is what it is supposed to be at, I'm not sure from your description. Also enhance cooling of the amp if you can, I run fans on mine if they have a heat issue. Warm is one thing, hot is another and not good for amp.

The Kicker L7 has an RMS power range of from 50-750 watts and a maximum power handling capability of 1,500 watts so your Sony amp will power it OK. A more powerful monoblock like the Alpine MRP-M1000 or the Kicker 08ZX750.1 would provide even more power and could operate safely at 2ohms.

You have the voice coils wired properly for the Sony amp. It's OK to have the sub impedance higher, but you definitely do not want it lower than the 4ohms the amp is rated at in bridged mode.

Depends on your budget. Look for something that does 300wrms at 2ohms.

Do to the impedance Of your sub u can't run it @2ohms its going to either be @1ohm or 4ohms and your amp isn't 1ohm stable and u will risk damaging your amp. So your only option is to run it @4ohms and on a good note your sub is 100-600 watts RMS and your amp will push 400-500 watts RMS @4ohms. Now if you want to run 2 sub's in the future That amp will work perfect because it pushes 1,200watts RMS @2ohms and to wire your 2 sub's @1ohm just follow the steps in the image below. MY BEST GUESS FROM WHAT YOU HAVE SAID IS THAT THE BOX WAS TO SMALL. BUT YOU ARE OVERPOWERING THE SUB RUNNING IT AT 2 OHMS ON A 750 WATT AMP WITH A SUB THAT IS ONLY RATED FOR 600. NO MATTER HOW FAR YOU TURN YOUR SETTINGS DOWN, YOUR STILL PUSHING TO MUCH POWER FOR THE SUB TO HANDLE. IT IS ONLY RATED 600 WATTS FOR A REASON. ESPECIALLY IF YOU LISTEN TO MUSIC THAT HAS A REAL LOW END AND THEN A HARD HIT. REMEMBER A HARD HIT WILL SPIKE YOUR AMPS OUTPUT THEREFORE PUSHING MORE WATTAGE TO THE SUB.

Yes, only if you can prove it and believe me, they have so many loop holes now that they can pretty much do what they want. The fact is though, the RMS ratings on speakers can vary, but usually mean either Max watts or Normal (constant) listening range, depending on manufacturer. The other thing to mention is, to get the best sound out of your speakers, they say to put exactly half the watts of power to the RMS watts that your speakers are made for, just for future reference. OK, you don't bridge subs. You bridge amps, if they are capable of being bridged (not all are).

Bridging is a method of connecting the channels of a multi-channel amp in such a way that the amp delivers the output of 2 stereo channels into a single mono load.

The Polk DB1040DVC is a sub with dual 4ohm voice coils. You can wire the voice coils to present a final 2ohm load (parallel) or a final 8ohm load (series). The rated power range is 50-270 watts RMS. Since you can parallel the voice coils and have them present a 2ohm load to the amp, you are looking for an amp that provides a minimum of 50 and a maximum of 270 (round it up to 300) watts into a 2ohm load. The Rockford-Fosgate Punch 300.1 shown here for $170 seems tailor made for your Sub. If you can make do with less power and want to spend a little less money, the Orion Cobalt CO500.1 will deliver 250 watts RMS at 2ohms and you can buy it for $140. The punch is a better deal. If you decide to add another sub later, it will power them both with 150 watts each, a little low, but still decent. If you want a 2-channel bridgeable amp, I'd recommend the Kicker 08DX3002 shown here for $200. Note that in bridged mode, it is not stable at 2ohms, only down to 4ohms.

You can't wire a pair of single voice coil 2ohm subs to achieve a 2 ohm mono load. Too bad you don't have 2 four ohm SVC's. Sorry

Amp getting really hot

well it is getting hot due to the amp drawing and pushing alot of current. try getting lower gage wiring for power to the amp and lower gage speaker wire.
